Sun, Moon, rising sign: what to know

The faster a point moves in the sky, the more precise the birth data must be: the date for the Sun, often the time for the Moon, the time and place for the rising sign.

  1. The sun sign

    The date

The Sun stays about a month in each sign: the date is enough, except on the days when it changes sign.

    What is my sign?
  2. The moon sign

    The date and time

The Moon changes sign about every two and a half days: the time often decides between two signs.

  3. The rising sign

    Date, time, and place

The sign rising in the east changes about every two hours: the minute and the city matter.

The building blocks of a birth chart

A chart places each planet in a sign and in a house, then notes the angles between them. Here is what each word covers.

Our method

The real sky, the calculation shown

A calculated sky

Every position shown on Versana is calculated by our own engine, using the ephemerides of Astronomy Engine, an open-source library. Its results were compared with those of Swiss Ephemeris, the reference for astrology software, on sets of control dates: the differences measured stay under twenty arcseconds, far below anything that would change a sign or a house. Birth time is converted using the historical time zones of France, including daylight saving time and the war years. The calculation runs in your browser: no birth data is sent anywhere, or written into the page address.

A tradition reported as such

The conventions are stated, never hidden: tropical zodiac, anchored to the March equinox; Placidus houses by default, with other systems available; two decan systems shown side by side; traditional and modern rulers distinguished. The meanings come from tradition, from Ptolemy to the authors of the 20th century, and are reported in the conditional. They offer avenues for reflection, not events to wait for: no study has validated astrology scientifically, and even our horoscope, based on the real sky of the day, stays in the conditional.

Frequently asked questions about astrology

What is astrology?

Astrology is a symbolic system that associates meanings with the positions of the celestial bodies. It starts from a verifiable fact: the place in the zodiac where the Sun, the Moon, and each planet stand, recorded for a precise date, time, and place. It then applies a language inherited from tradition: signs, houses, aspects. The result, the birth chart, reads like a portrait to be interpreted. It does not describe a future written in advance and does not replace any professional advice.

Is astrology a science?

No. Astronomy, which calculates the position of the celestial bodies, is a science; astrology, which gives them a meaning, has received no scientific validation, and the studies that looked for a link between signs and character found no solid one. Versana presents it as a cultural tradition and a tool for personal reflection. The site’s calculations are exact; the interpretations are reported, in the conditional, and it is up to you to take from them whatever speaks to you.

Where does Western astrology come from?

It was born in Mesopotamia, where astronomers recorded the movements of the sky and drew omens from them for the king; the zodiac of twelve equal signs appears there around the 5th century BCE. In Hellenistic Egypt, it joined Greek geometry to produce the birth chart. Ptolemy synthesized it in the 2nd century in the Tetrabiblos, which was passed down by Arab scholars and then by medieval Europe. In the 20th century, authors such as André Barbault steered it toward psychology.
