The 10th house in a birth chart
On the chart wheel, the 10th house occupies the top, where the Sun stands around noon.
In the site’s default calculation, its cusp is the Midheaven, the degree of the zodiac that was culminating on the local meridian at the moment of birth. Nothing is more exposed than this point: astrologers read in it calling, career, status, public image, and more broadly what the person seeks to accomplish under the eyes of others. A nurse, a craftsperson, an elected official, a stay-at-home parent who organizes neighborhood life all have a 10th house: it does not measure prestige, it describes a direction.
The reading starts with the sign of the Midheaven. An MC in Aries would push toward undertaking, in Cancer toward protecting, in Aquarius toward innovating for the collective. The ruler of that sign then specifies where the resources of the profession lie: in the 3rd house, speech and writing; in the 6th, service and technique. The planets in the 10th house finally color the reputation: Jupiter would widen it, Saturn would make it slower to build but solid, Neptune hazier or more inspired.
Opposite, the 4th house speaks of home and origins. The top and bottom of the chart answer each other: you start from somewhere to go toward something. Conflicts between family life and professional ambition, the move accepted for a job or refused for the children, are read on this axis. A loaded 10th house and an empty 4th house do not say that family matters little: they show where energy flows most spontaneously.
