Astrologers place here chosen friendships, those that owe nothing to blood or neighborhood, as well as clubs, associations, work collectives, professional networks, and causes defended together. You also read in it hopes, in the concrete sense of the word: what you wish to see come about and the support you hope to receive in order to get there. It is a succedent house, which consolidates the drive of the angles.
The sign placed on its cusp gives the tone of friendships. In Taurus, slow and lasting friendships, formed around a table; in Gemini, a teeming address book and lively group chats. The ruler of that sign, according to the house it occupies, extends the domain elsewhere: in the 6th house, friends come from daily work; in the 9th, from a trip or a training course. The planets in the 11th house would describe the climate of the group: Saturn old and demanding bonds, Venus tender friendships.
The 5–11 axis sets personal pleasure against the shared project. The 5th house creates for itself, plays, loves, brings into the world; the 11th house extends this to others, turns individual drive into a common venture. An evening among friends sits at the junction of the two. Too much 5th, you shine without a team; too much 11th, you serve the group and forget what makes you vibrate alone.
Romantic life often crosses this house: many couples are born in a group of friends, an association, a coworker’s wedding.
The 11th house also tells of the place of friendship in love, the need to be accomplices as much as lovers. It finally says how the couple fits into a wider network: shared evenings, mutual friends, or well-separated circles. Lilly placed here favors obtained from the powerful and money from the king’s office: in today’s language, backing and recommendations. Careers in nonprofits, cooperation, innovation, or online communities would easily recognize themselves here.
Over the weeks, this house shows in the message group that pings in the evening, the monthly meeting of an association, Sunday’s game with the same teammates, the neighborhood community garden project.
It is also read in the way of voicing wishes: a list of resolutions, a goal board stuck on the refrigerator, or hopes kept to yourself and confided only to a few close ones.
This 11th place received in Greek the beautiful name “Good Spirit” (agathos daimôn), in the sense of a good protective genius; Vettius Valens and other authors saw in it the joy of Jupiter: the planet of benefits would be at home there.
William Lilly, in 1647, links to it friends, hopes, confidence, support, and favors; the house was reputed to be one of the happiest of the chart.
Which sign occupies the cusp? It varies with the time and the place, but also with the division method. The site uses Placidus by default; Porphyry, equal division, and Whole Sign division remain available in the chart settings. Beyond the 66th degree of latitude, the Placidus method no longer works and Porphyry takes over.
