The 4th house in a birth chart
On the wheel, the 4th house occupies the lowest point, the one the ancients called the bottom of the sky, the Imum Coeli: the part of the zodiac that passed beneath our feet, on the other side of the Earth, at the hour of birth.
With the site’s standard setting, the cusp of the house falls exactly there. Astrologers read in it what is intimate and foundational: the family home, parents, lineage, memory, the Sunday kitchen, but also the home you choose as an adult, the land you own, the garden you tend. It is the house of retreat, the one where you do not have to play a role.
The sign on its cusp colors the way of living at home and in a family: an Imum Coeli in Gemini would give a chatty home, full of books and visitors; in Capricorn, a structured house, with its rules and duties. The ruler of that sign, according to the house it occupies, would say where family life extends: into work, travel, friendships. The planets in the 4th house would finally describe the atmosphere of the childhood home or of the one you recreate: Venus harmony, Mars agitation, the Moon attachment.
This house forms the vertical axis of the chart with the 10th house. Below the roots, above the treetop: you rise toward a career from a base. Tensions between private and professional life, between the need to stay and the urge to leave, between loyalty to your own and personal ambition, are read on this axis. The two houses are not really opposed; they answer each other like the trunk and the branches.
