It begins at the summer solstice, on the longest day, when the light reaches its maximum and is about to start decreasing: hence the idea of a sign that protects what has been sown. Water brings sensitivity and intuition, the cardinal modality a capacity to take the initiative, and the Moon, its ruler, memory, changing moods, and the need for a place of one’s own.
A Cancer person would be attentive to others first. They sense that a friend is upset, keep the family photos, and remember the date of a birthday or a colleague’s favorite dish. Their inner world is rich; they confide little, but those they let in discover a rare loyalty. Beneath a reserved exterior, they know how to fight energetically to defend their own, like the crab guarding its shelter.
This sensitivity has its downsides. Moods shift quickly with the atmosphere, and an innocent remark can hurt for a long time. The past sometimes weighs too heavily, and nostalgia holds back from taking risks. The need to protect can become overwhelming for those close by. Astrologers set Cancer against Capricorn, the sign of structure and public life: Cancer would benefit from drawing a little distance from it, so that its attachment helps without smothering.
Strengths
Creating a warm atmosphere where everyone feels welcome.
Guessing what a person dares not say out loud.
Staying loyal to loved ones in difficult times.
Passing on the memory of a family, a place, a group.
Watch points
Holding a grudge for a long time without ever expressing it clearly.
Letting the mood of the day dictate important decisions.
Protecting to the point of restricting other people’s freedom.
Embellishing the past to the point of sulking at the present.
Cancer in your life
In love
Cancer would seek emotional security above all.
A Cancer person becomes deeply attached, likes to build a nest for two, and shows affection through concrete gestures: a meal prepared, a note slipped into a bag, a faithful presence through hard times. The relationship becomes a refuge for them, and trust is won slowly but lastingly.
This depth has its fragility. A clumsy word or an oversight can hurt them more than they show, and they then withdraw without explaining why. Jealousy or the fear of abandonment can darken the best moments. Tradition advises them to state their needs instead of waiting to be guessed, and to leave the other person a space of their own, without seeing it as a disavowal: a secure bond does not require constant presence.
At work
Cancer would find its place in support work, hospitality, teaching, catering, real estate, or the trades of memory: archives, history, heritage.
A Cancer person creates a climate of trust in a team and looks after colleagues’ well-being as much as results. Human-sized companies, where people know one another, suit them particularly well.
Cold or overly competitive environments unsettle them. A public criticism or a lack of recognition can make them doubt themselves for a long time. They gain by separating the value of their work from the affection they feel for their colleagues, and by setting their limits before being overwhelmed by requests. Their intuition about people, useful for hiring, negotiating, or supporting others, deserves to be presented as a skill, not as a mere character trait.
In daily life
A Cancer person gives a great deal of room to their home.
They like hosting, cooking for loved ones, keeping objects full of memories, and maintaining family traditions. A welcoming house is a source of balance for them, and quiet evenings are often worth more than a noisy outing.
The danger would be to shut themselves away in this cocoon. Declined invitations pile up, habits become barriers, and other people’s worries invade their thoughts. Tradition suggests they open up to the outside regularly: a club, a group activity, a walk somewhere new. It also invites them to sort what they keep, so that memory remains a treasure and not a weight that clutters closets as much as the mind.
Cancer: decans, compatibility, and tradition
The 3 decans of Cancer
Each sign divides into three decans of about ten days, each with its own nuance.
Two traditions give them a ruling planet or sign. Dates for 2026.

Associated sign
Cancer (Moon)
Venus opens Cancer in the order of the faces; the Moon, ruler of the sign, governs it in the triplicities. This third would be the tenderest and the most homebound, attached to comfort, shared meals, and objects that tell a family story.
Mercury on one side, Mars through Scorpio on the other: the heart of Cancer changes tone depending on the school. Memory would be sharper here, the analysis of feelings finer, or emotion more intense and more combative when it comes to defending someone close.
The Moon returns as a Chaldean face, while the triplicities entrust this third to Pisces and Jupiter. One would describe the dreamiest Cancer, open to compassion and the imagination, whose generosity readily spills beyond the family circle.
The water of Scorpio and Pisces would speak the same language as that of Cancer: intuition, modesty, attachment.
Taurus and Virgo, in sextile, would offer firm ground on which to build a home. With Aries and Libra, in square, different rhythms would have to be tamed, and Capricorn, the opposite sign, embodies the public life that Cancer gladly leaves to go home. A line of reading, never a forecast.

Mythology and tradition
The celestial Crab would be the one sent by Hera against Heracles.
Hyginus (De astronomia II, 23), following Eratosthenes, tells that during the fight against the Lernaean Hydra, a giant crab rose from the marsh and pinched the hero’s foot; Heracles crushed it. To reward it for its loyalty, Hera placed it among the stars. Hyginus also mentions, in the same constellation, the Donkeys and their Manger, a cluster of stars visible to the naked eye that the Romans called Praesepe.
Astrologers make Cancer the domicile of the Moon: in Ptolemy, the Sun rules Leo and the Moon rules Cancer, the two luminaries sharing the signs of summer. Jupiter would be exalted here at the 15th degree. Manilius places the sign under the protection of Mercury. The name of the Tropic of Cancer recalls that, when the Greeks fixed the zodiac, the summer solstice occurred when the Sun entered this constellation; this is still true in the tropical zodiac, even though the constellation has shifted.

Are you really Cancer?
Cancer starts at the solstice, on June 20 or 21, and gives way to Leo around July 22 or 23. If you were born on one of those days, beware of almanac tables that give a fixed date: the changeover happens at a precise hour, different every year. The table calculates it in French time over two years; for another date, the “What is my zodiac sign?” tool finds it.
From the summer solstice (June 20 or 21) to July 22 or 23. At some thirty-one and a half days, Cancer is the longest of the signs: the Earth passes farthest from the Sun in early July, and the star’s apparent course is slowest then. For a birth on the border, rely on the exact time and the town of birth rather than on an almanac table.
Why is Cancer associated with the Moon?
In Ptolemy, the two luminaries receive the two signs at the heart of summer: Leo for the Sun, Cancer for the Moon. The other planets are then distributed on either side. The Moon gives Cancer its traditional themes: memory, sensitivity, cycles, family. This is a symbolic correspondence, with no connection to a physical effect of the Moon on personality.
Is Cancer too emotional a sign?
Tradition describes Cancer as the most sensitive of the cardinal signs, but sensitivity does not mean fragility. This receptiveness makes it possible to understand others, support them, and create lasting bonds. It can overflow when moods take over or when an old wound goes unspoken. The rest of the chart, and in particular the natal Moon, nuances this solar portrait a great deal.
Which signs get along well with Cancer?
Scorpio and Pisces, with which it shares water, come first in the manuals; Taurus and Virgo, reputed to be reassuring, follow closely. Capricorn, opposite, forms with it a much-studied axis between intimacy and ambition. These markers remain general: the tone of a couple depends more on the two Moons and the two Venuses than on the Sun signs.
What does “Cancer” mean and why this name?
“Cancer” is the Latin word for crab, a translation of the Greek karkinos: the name comes directly from the crab sent by Hera in the myth of Heracles. The glyph ♋ would draw two folded claws, or two spirals turned toward each other, which some authors link to the Sun, which seems to stop and then set off again at the solstice. These readings of the symbol are late and vary from one manual to another.
