Zodiac compatibility at a glance

For you

Astrological compatibility describes how two temperaments meet; it never says whether a relationship will succeed or fail.

A strength

Putting precise words on differences of rhythm, needs, or ways of loving that you feel without naming them.

Something to watch

The geometry

Seven relationships between two signs

Two signs are 0 to 6 signs apart on the zodiac, that is, 0° to 180°. Each gap has a name, borrowed from the aspects of classical astrology.

  • Same sign

    0° · 12 pairs

Two people of the same sign share element, mode, and ruler. They recognize each other quickly and understand each other half-spoken, but their blind spots add up instead of balancing out.

    Aries and AriesTaurus and Taurus

  • Semi-sextile

    30° · 12 pairs

Two neighboring signs, 30° apart, that differ in everything: element, mode, and polarity. Tradition saw no aspect there; the relationship is built through curiosity and mutual learning, not through ease.

    Aries and TaurusTaurus and Gemini

  • Sextile

    60° · 12 pairs

At 60°, two signs of allied elements: fire with air, earth with water. Exchange flows easily; tradition speaks of a quiet harmony, which nonetheless takes a little initiative to blossom.

    Aries and GeminiTaurus and Cancer

  • Square

    90° · 12 pairs

At 90°, two signs of the same mode but of clashing elements. Each wants to move forward in their own way: frequent friction, but also a stimulation that pushes both out of their habits.

    Aries and CancerTaurus and Leo

  • Trine

    120° · 12 pairs

At 120°, two signs of the same element. Close values, a similar rhythm, spontaneous understanding: tradition sees the most fluid accord here, with the risk of settling in without ever surprising each other.

    Aries and LeoTaurus and Virgo

  • Quincunx

    150° · 12 pairs

At 150°, two signs with no element, mode, or polarity in common. The relationship calls for constant adjustments, made of misunderstandings and discoveries; it teaches flexibility to those who live it.

    Aries and VirgoTaurus and Libra

  • Opposition

    180° · 6 pairs

At 180°, each sign faces its complement on the circle. Same mode, elements that answer each other: a mirror attraction, where the other shows what is missing, and where balance is negotiated.

Understanding

What gets compared between two signs

  • The elements

Fire, earth, air, water: each sign belongs to one of the four elements, three signs per element. Two signs of the same element share a way of feeling and acting. Tradition calls fire and air complementary, like earth and water; fire and water, air and earth, harder to bring into tune. These are underlying tendencies, which each full chart then modulates.

  • The modalities

Cardinal, fixed, or mutable: the mode describes the relationship to movement. Cardinal signs start things, fixed signs hold and consolidate, mutable signs adapt and handle the transition. Two signs of the same mode understand each other on tempo, but may compete for the same place: two cardinals both want to decide, two fixed signs refuse to yield, two mutables hesitate together.

  • The ruling planets

Each sign is associated with a ruling planet: Mars for Aries and Scorpio, Venus for Taurus and Libra, Mercury for Gemini and Virgo, and so on. Two signs that share a ruler have a family resemblance. When the rulers are opposed in tradition, like Mars and Venus, the pair oscillates between attraction and incomprehension.

  • Why there is no score

Many sites display “90%” or a score out of ten for each pair. We do the opposite, by choice: no serious calculation measures the future of two people from their Sun signs alone. A number would reassure or worry for no reason. We describe the geometry, the accords, and the frictions, and leave the conclusion to the people concerned.

The Sun sign is not enough

The Sun sign tells only part of the story. Two people of the same sign can have an opposite Moon, Venus, or rising sign, and therefore very different needs. To truly compare two temperaments, astrology compares two whole charts, planet by planet: this is synastry. Your birth chart already shows your share of the picture.

  • The Moon

The Moon describes emotional needs, what reassures and what worries: two Moons in tune make daily life much easier.

  • Venus

Venus shows the way of loving, seducing, and appreciating: tastes, gestures of tenderness, expectations in the relationship.

  • Mars

Mars tells about desire, energy, and the way of arguing: useful for understanding how a conflict breaks out.

  • The rising sign

The rising sign colors the manner of approach, the first impression, and the lifestyle; it requires the exact time of birth.

Frequently asked questions about zodiac compatibility

How do you know if two signs are compatible?

You first look at the distance between the two signs on the zodiac, from 0 to 180 degrees, then at their elements, modes, and rulers. These markers describe likely affinities and frictions. They know nothing of how a relationship turns out, which depends on two whole people, their history, and their choices.

Why is there no compatibility score?

Because no percentage rests on a verifiable method. A “40%” between two signs discourages, for no reason, couples who work, and a “95%” reassures wrongly. We prefer to explain what catches and what rubs, area by area, so that each reader can judge their own relationship with these markers.

What do trine, square, and opposition mean?

These are angles between two signs, taken from the aspects of classical astrology. The trine, 120 degrees, joins two signs of the same element; the square, 90 degrees, two signs of the same mode with clashing elements; the opposition, 180 degrees, two signs facing each other. Ptolemy ranked the last two among the difficult configurations.

Do two signs of the same element get along better?

They share an underlying temperament: the same relationship to action, emotions, or ideas. The initial understanding is often simpler. But resemblance has its downside: the same weaknesses, with no one to balance them. A pair of signs from different elements sometimes learns more from each other.

Is the Sun sign enough to know a compatibility?

No. It represents only the position of the Sun at birth. The Moon, Venus, Mars, and the rising sign weigh just as much in life as a pair, and differ from one person to another within the same sign. A serious reading compares the two full birth charts, which is called synastry.

What is synastry?

Synastry overlays two people’s charts and notes the angles between their planets: one person’s Moon on the other’s Sun, Venus square Mars, and so on. It is the classical method of relationship astrology. It requires the birth dates, times, and places of both people.

Which sign is most compatible with mine?

No sign is the designated partner of another. Tradition grants more ease to signs of the same element and of allied elements, and more friction to squares and oppositions. But solid relationships exist in all 78 combinations: the chart lets you read each one, with its supports and its points of vigilance.
