It opens with the autumn equinox, the moment when day and night are of equal length, an image of a perfect weighing. Air gives a taste for exchange and ideas, the cardinal modality the capacity to initiate, and Venus, its ruler, a sense of harmony, beauty, and relationships. Saturn, planet of the rule, would be exalted here: tradition makes it the sign of justice.
A Libra person would have a talent for relationships. They sense tensions in a room, find the words that soothe, and know how to present a disagreement without hurting anyone. They like beautiful things, a harmonious home, a well-kept appearance, an elegant conversation. They readily think things through with another person, and a decision seems better to them when it has been discussed. Their sense of fairness pushes them to defend what seems right to them.
Their weak point: deciding. Weighing the pros and cons can go on a long time, and the fear of conflict sometimes leads them to say yes to avoid an argument. The need to please can make them lose sight of their own wishes. Astrologers set Libra against Aries, the sign of self-assertion: Libra would do well to draw on its frankness, so that harmony is not paid for with its silence.

Forgetting your own desires in order to please others better.
Libra in your life
In love
Libra would be the sign of relationship par excellence.
They love being a couple, complicity, shared moments, and take care over seduction: an elegant dinner, a fitting compliment, a delicate attention. They look for a partner with whom balance is built together, in respect and exchange.
Their difficulty lies in conflict. To preserve harmony, they may keep a disagreement quiet until it weighs too much. The need to be in a couple can also keep them in an unsatisfying relationship. Astrologers advise them to state their expectations clearly, even if it creates a passing tension, and to remember that a disagreement well expressed often strengthens a bond more than it threatens it. True balance includes their own needs.
At work
Libra would thrive in the professions of relationship and harmony: law, mediation, human resources, diplomacy, creative work, fashion, decoration, consulting.
They know how to negotiate, work in a pair, and present a project in an appealing way. Their sense of fairness makes them a valued go-between in delicate situations.
Difficult choices can put them in a bind. They risk putting off a decision, seeking everyone’s opinion before acting, or being swayed by the most convincing person. They gain by setting a deadline on their deliberations, relying on written criteria, and accepting that no choice will satisfy everyone. Their tact then becomes a source of authority, and not a way of avoiding conflict.
In daily life
A Libra person appreciates beauty and comfort: a harmonious home, objects chosen with taste, pleasant moments with loved ones.
They like going out, seeing an exhibition, sharing a meal, and attach importance to good manners and the quality of exchanges.
Indecision can nevertheless complicate small choices: the restaurant, the gift, the color of the sofa. The tendency to accommodate everyone can lead them to overload their schedule. It would help them to set aside time alone, with no need to please, and to make small decisions quickly, saving reflection for what really matters. Inner balance makes outer harmony easier.
Libra: decans, compatibility, and tradition
The 3 decans of Libra
Each sign divides into three decans of about ten days, each with its own nuance.
Two traditions give them a ruling planet or sign. Dates for 2026.

Libra (Venus)
The Moon opens Libra among the Chaldeans; Venus, ruler of the sign, governs it in the triplicities. One would describe here the Libra most sensitive to atmospheres, attached to the charm of relationships and the peace of daily life. A possible downside: giving in too quickly to avoid a scene, then regretting it in silence.
Saturn, exalted in Libra, also reigns over its middle in both systems, as a face and as ruler of Aquarius. Tradition places here the Libra most attached to principles: a sense of rules, of fairness, of commitments kept over the long run.
For the series of faces, Jupiter; for the triplicities, Mercury coming from Gemini: the last slice would combine breadth of view and liveliness. One would describe a diplomatic, talkative Libra, at ease in negotiations, salons, and exchanges of ideas, able to defend a cause through words rather than confrontation.
Ideas flow easily between Libra, Gemini, and Aquarius, three air signs.
Leo and Sagittarius, in sextile, would warm its delicacy with a bit of boldness. Cancer and Capricorn, at a right angle, would ask it to arbitrate between heart and duty. As for Aries, its opposite number, it acts where Libra deliberates: the most classic couple axis in astrology. These correspondences remain symbols.

Mythology and tradition
Libra is the only sign of the zodiac that depicts neither a human, nor an animal, nor a mythical creature.
For Greek astronomers, its stars first formed the Claws of the neighboring Scorpion, the Chelai, and Ptolemy still uses this name in the Almagest. The name Scales, Zygos in Greek and Libra in Latin, took hold in Roman times. Virgil, in the Georgics, evokes the Scales that make the hours of day and night equal at the autumn equinox, when the Sun entered it.
Babylonian tablets already knew “the Scales,” zibānītu, so the Roman name returns to a usage older than that of the Greeks. Later, the image was brought closer to neighboring Virgo, who is painted holding the pans of Justice. In astrology, Ptolemy makes it one of Venus’s two domiciles and places the exaltation of Saturn at the 21st degree; the Sun would be in fall here, because the days grow shorter. Manilius makes it the work of Vulcan, the smith god. Tradition reads in it measure, law, and relationship.

Are you really Libra?
Libra opens with the autumn equinox, around September 22 or 23, and gives way to Scorpio around October 22 or 23. A birthday on these dates calls for a calculation: depending on the year and the time, the Sun is either still in the previous sign or already in the next. There is no mixed sign. The table shows the exact moment of the changeover, in French legal time.
It begins at the autumn equinox, on September 22 or 23, and lasts until October 22 or 23, a little over thirty days. This beginning is not an arbitrary convention: it is the instant when the Sun crosses the celestial equator heading south. For a birth straddling two signs, the precise time and place settle the matter; the table gives the calculated changeovers.
Why is Libra so indecisive?
Tradition ties this indecision to its symbol: to weigh is to examine both pans before deciding. Venus, its ruler, would add the wish to please and to avoid conflict. This slowness is also a quality: it allows thoughtful, fair choices. It becomes a problem when it prevents action. The rest of the chart, Mars or the Moon in particular, can make a Libra person very decisive.
What is the ruling planet of Libra?
Venus rules Libra, as she does Taurus. In Libra, she would be more relational and aesthetic, turned toward harmony and sharing; in Taurus, more sensual and earthy. Saturn is exalted here at the 21st degree, which ties the sign to justice and rules. Mars, ruler of the opposite sign Aries, would be in detriment here, and the Sun in fall.
Which signs is Libra compatible with?
Tradition pairs Libra with Gemini and Aquarius, its fellow air signs, and with Leo and Sagittarius, whose drive it appreciates. Aries, its opposite number, forms with it the axis of self and other, the most discussed in the zodiac. None of these associations amounts to a forecast: each partner’s Venus and Moon count for more than the Sun sign.
Why is Libra the only sign that is an object?
Originally, the Greeks saw in these stars the claws of the neighboring Scorpion. The name Scales, already known to the Babylonians, won out in Roman times, probably because the Sun passed through it at the autumn equinox, when day and night are equal. This symbol of balance gave the sign its traditional reading: measure, justice, and relationship, rather than an animal instinct.
