In tradition, Capricorn is the sign of the ascent.
The Sun enters it at the winter solstice, on the shortest day, when light begins to return slowly. Earth gives a sense of the concrete, the cardinal modality gives the capacity to undertake, and Saturn, its ruler, gives patience, structure, and the long view. The goat climbing the mountain, step by step, sums up this image of an effort that bears fruit over the years.
A Capricorn person would take their commitments seriously. They plan, save, set goals, and reach them. You can entrust them with a responsibility: they will carry it through to the end, without complaining. Their humor is often deadpan, and their reserve hides a sensitivity they show only to those close to them. With age, many authors say the sign softens and loosens up.
The downside is rigor. Self-demand can become harshness, and a sense of duty can shrink the share of pleasure and the unexpected. Reserve passes for coldness, and the concern to succeed can put work ahead of relationships. Astrologers set Capricorn against Cancer, the sign of home and emotions: Capricorn would do well to give itself the tenderness the sign often reserves for others.

Capricorn in your life
In love
A Capricorn person would be serious and faithful.
They commit slowly, after checking the strength of the bond, then build a lasting relationship. They show their love through actions: material security, plans for the future, a reliable presence in important moments. Their tenderness is real, but often reserved.
Their difficulty lies in expression. They can seem cold or too busy with work, and forget to say what they feel. The need for control can also stiffen the relationship. Tradition invites them to leave room for lightness, surprises, and moments with no goal, and to show their emotions more often. A couple also needs play, not only well-run projects.
At work
Capricorn would be at ease in positions of responsibility and in jobs built on structure: management, leadership, law, finance, administration, architecture, engineering, and entrepreneurship.
A Capricorn person knows how to plan, organize, and hold a course over several years. Their reliability and discipline make them a pillar for a team or an institution.
Their demanding nature can nonetheless weigh on them as on others. They risk working too much, delegating with difficulty, or judging harshly those who move more slowly. They gain by acknowledging everyone’s efforts, giving themselves real breaks, and valuing the road traveled, not only the goal. Their ambition then becomes a quiet strength, respected for its consistency.
In daily life
A Capricorn person likes organization and foresight: a budget kept, a planned calendar, a well-maintained home.
They enjoy activities that call for patience and consistency, hiking, gardening, collecting, learning a craft. Traditions and regular appointments reassure them.
The risk is turning everything into a duty. Even hobbies can become goals to reach, and rest can pass for a waste of time. Tradition encourages them to enjoy free pleasures with no usefulness, a film, a stroll, a meal without a watch, and to share their moments of joy more often with those close to them. Success can also be savored in the present.

Capricorn (Saturn)
Jupiter opens Capricorn in the Chaldean order, while Saturn, its ruler, governs it by triplicity. Depending on the school, the sign’s ambition would be tinged with optimism and breadth of view, or else purely Saturnian: duty, patience, a taste for summits.
Mars, exalted in this sign, becomes its face here; Taurus and Venus rule it by triplicity. We would describe a Capricorn who is more combative, or more attached to comfort and tangible pleasures: a success one also wants to enjoy.
The Sun ends the series of faces of Capricorn, while Virgo and Mercury hold the last triplicity. This final third would be more radiant or more methodical: a seriousness that seeks to be recognized publicly, or to be impeccably organized.
Taurus and Virgo, its fellow earth signs, would share with Capricorn a taste for work well done and for long-term projects.
Scorpio and Pisces, in sextile, would soften its reserve. Aries and Libra, at right angles, would challenge the way it holds the reins, and Cancer, opposite, reminds it what home brings to ambition. These tendencies are checked on two charts, not on two dates.

Mythology and tradition
Capricorn is depicted as a goat with a fish’s tail, one of the oldest images in the sky.
Babylonian astronomers already drew a “goat-fish” in these stars, an animal associated with the god Ea, master of fresh waters and of wisdom. Among the Greeks, Hyginus (De astronomia II, 28) tells that Pan, surprised by the monster Typhon, threw himself into the Nile: the submerged half became fish, the other stayed goat, and Zeus is said to have fixed this trick in the sky. Eratosthenes sees instead Aegipan, raised with the young Zeus, who is said to have put the Titans to flight by blowing into a conch.
In astrology, Capricorn is the domicile of Saturn for Ptolemy, who also places the exaltation of Mars here at the 28th degree; Jupiter would be in fall. Manilius entrusts its stars to Vesta, guardian of the hearth. The Tropic of Capricorn owes its name to the time when the winter solstice coincided with the Sun’s entry into this constellation; precession has since shifted the phenomenon, but the tropical sign remains tied to the solstice. Tradition makes it the sign of the long view and of foundations.

Are you really Capricorn?
Capricorn begins at the winter solstice, around December 21 or 22, and ends on January 19 or 20. In late December or mid-January, the date alone is not enough: the change of sign never falls at the same moment twice. Bring your time of birth; the table gives the calculated moment of entry into and exit from the sign for two years.

Frequently asked questions about Capricorn
What are the dates of the Capricorn sign?
From the winter solstice, on December 21 or 22, to January 19 or 20. It is the shortest of the signs, barely twenty-nine and a half days: in early January, the Earth passes closest to the Sun, whose apparent motion speeds up. The sign straddles two calendar years, which changes nothing in the calculation: the moment of entry is checked with the full date and the time.
What is Capricorn’s ruling planet?
Saturn rules Capricorn, and traditionally Aquarius as well. The slowest planet visible to the naked eye, it symbolizes in tradition time, structure, discipline, and maturity. Mars is exalted here at the 28th degree, which would associate the sign with persevering ambition. The Moon, ruler of opposite Cancer, would be in detriment here, and Jupiter in fall.
Is Capricorn cold?
Its reserve is often mistaken for coldness. Tradition describes rather a modesty: Capricorn shows feelings through actions, reliability, commitment, protection, more than through words. With those close to them, a Capricorn person can be warm and funny. The rest of the chart, and the Moon in particular, shed far more light on how a person expresses emotions.
Which signs is Capricorn compatible with?
Its classic affinities go to Taurus and Virgo, which share its values, then to Scorpio and Pisces, which would help it open up. Cancer, opposite, reflects back the image of home, complementary and demanding. These pairings remain theoretical; a serious reading compares the Moons, Venuses, and Mars placements of both partners. Two Capricorn people, finally, would understand each other quickly, at the risk of a very serious couple.
Why is Capricorn half goat, half fish?
This figure comes from Mesopotamia, where the goat-fish accompanied the god Ea. The Greeks took it up and explained it through the myth of Pan, partly turned into a fish to escape Typhon. Astrological tradition draws a double nature from it: the goat that climbs summits, an image of ambition, and the fish’s tail, which recalls deep emotions, often hidden.
