In tradition, Aquarius is the sign of independent thinking.
The Sun passes through it in the heart of winter, when nature seems frozen but the days are already growing longer: a promise not yet visible. Air brings a taste for ideas and exchange, the fixed modality brings loyalty to convictions, and Saturn brings rigor and reflection. Moderns add Uranus, symbol of the unexpected and of invention. The image of the water bearer, who pours out his jar for everyone, evokes sharing more than emotion.
An Aquarius person would need to think for themselves. They question habits and are interested in technology, science, collective causes, and ideas about the future. They feel at ease in groups, associations, and friendships founded on shared values, and treat everyone as an equal, whatever their status. Their freedom of tone sometimes surprises: they can defend a minority opinion calmly, without trying to please, and change their mind only if the arguments convince them.
The downside is distance. A taste for ideas can lead away from emotions, their own as well as others’, and defending great causes can make them forget a friend in difficulty. Attachment to freedom sometimes turns into a contrary streak, or a form of intellectual stubbornness, paradoxical for a sign that sees itself as open. Astrologers set Aquarius against Leo, the sign of the heart and personal expression: Aquarius would have much to learn from this warmth, by letting its feelings speak as much as its principles.

Showing a reserve that those close to you take for coldness.
Contradicting on principle rather than from real conviction.
Neglecting loved ones in favor of great causes.
Rejecting every rule, even those that protect the group.
Aquarius in your life
In love
An Aquarius person would look first for friendship and complicity.
They appreciate relationships founded on respect, freedom, and the sharing of ideas. They like to be surprised, to discover different worlds, and to live a relationship that steps outside conventions. Trust and the space left to each person matter a great deal to them.
Their difficulty lies in expressing emotions. They can seem detached, rationalize what they feel, or avoid conversations that are too charged. The need for independence can also be seen as a lack of commitment. Tradition invites them to express their tenderness more often, to accept moments of vulnerability, and to show that freedom and attachment can go together in a couple.
At work
Aquarius would show its worth in innovation and collective projects: technology, science, research, associations, creative work, consulting, and social projects.
An Aquarius person brings original ideas, a vision of the future, and an ability to work in a network. Environments that leave freedom and value creativity suit them well.
Rigid hierarchies and rules without explanation put them in difficulty. They risk opposing on principle or leaving concrete tasks aside in favor of ideas. They gain by explaining their proposals patiently, relying on more practical colleagues, and choosing their battles. Their originality then becomes a real force for transformation, appreciated by the whole organization. Positions that leave room for initiative, networked work, or teams with little hierarchy would suit this temperament particularly well.
In daily life
An Aquarius person likes novelty and freedom: trying an app, joining an association, discovering an unexpected idea or place.
They keep a wide circle of friends, often very different from one another, and enjoy discussions about the future, society, or science.
The downside would be spreading themselves thin across multiple collective commitments, or neglecting the small routines that make life easier. It would do them good to preserve simple moments with those close to them, with no debate or project, and to give themselves a minimal framework for practical tasks. A certain regularity leaves more room for inventiveness than it takes away.
Aquarius: decans, compatibility, and tradition
The 3 decans of Aquarius
Each sign divides into three decans of about ten days, each with its own nuance.
Two traditions give them a ruling planet or sign. Dates for 2026.
1st decan
In 2026
January 20 to January 29
Planet
Venus
Associated sign
Aquarius (Saturn)
Venus according to the faces, Saturn according to the triplicities, and Uranus for those who keep the modern rulers. A first third that is more sociable and friendly in one reading, the most independent and thoughtful in the other; the ideal would take a very personal form here.
A rare agreement: Mercury rules this middle third both as a face and as ruler of Gemini. Tradition would see here the most inventive and communicative Aquarius, drawn to science, technology, and networks of exchange of every kind.
The Moon closes the series of faces of Aquarius; Libra and Venus are its triplicity. The last third would be more sensitive or more diplomatic: an idealism turned toward relationship, fairness, and harmony between people, which prefers to persuade gently rather than shake things up.
Aquarius would find natural allies in Gemini and Libra, which like it love ideas and exchange.
Aries and Sagittarius, in sextile, would give momentum to its projects. Taurus and Scorpio, fixed like it but in square, would resist it every step of the way, and Leo, its counterpart, speaks to it of the heart where it speaks of the group. Tones, with no promise or prohibition.

Mythology and tradition
Aquarius is depicted as a figure tipping over a jar from which a stream of water flows, down to the mouth of the Southern Fish.
Hyginus (De astronomia II, 29), like Eratosthenes before him, recognizes Ganymede, a young Trojan prince of great beauty, carried off by Zeus changed into an eagle to become the cupbearer of the gods on Olympus; the neighboring constellation Aquila would recall the episode. Hyginus also cites Deucalion, survivor of the flood with Pyrrha. The Babylonians already pictured a figure pouring water here, linked to the god Ea.
In astrology, Aquarius is the second domicile of Saturn for Ptolemy, which gives it a tone of rigor and reflection. William Herschel discovered Uranus in 1781: modern authors then associated the new planet with the sign, for its unexpected and innovative character. Manilius places Juno here, opposite Jupiter’s Leo. As for the “Age of Aquarius,” popularized in the 20th century, it rests on the slow precession of the vernal point; authors agree neither on its date nor on its meaning.

In 2026, the Sun moves through Aquarius from January 20 (2:44 AM) to February 18 (4:51 PM), Paris time
Are you really Aquarius?
Aquarius begins on January 19 or 20 and ends on February 18 or 19. A birth on these dates sits on the border between two signs: Capricorn or Aquarius on one side, Aquarius or Pisces on the other. Only a calculation that takes the time into account can settle it. The table gives both passages, to the minute, for the current year and the next.
From January 19 or 20 to February 18 or 19, about thirty days. Entry into Aquarius most often falls on January 20 in Paris time, but some years on the evening of the 19th: a gap that is enough to change the sign of a birth. A calculation from the full date, the time, and the town settles the doubt; the table gives the year’s passages.
Saturn or Uranus: which is Aquarius’s planet?
It depends on the school followed. Ancient tradition knows only Saturn, which also rules Capricorn and which would give the sign its rigor and loyalty to principles. Uranus, discovered by William Herschel in 1781, was later assigned to it by the moderns for its unexpected and innovative side. Many astrologers today read the two together. The Sun, ruler of opposite Leo, would be in detriment here.
Is Aquarius a water sign?
No, despite its name and its image, Aquarius is an air sign. The water bearer symbolizes sharing, water poured out for everyone, rather than the element itself. There are three water signs: Cancer, Scorpio, and Pisces. This confusion is common; it is a reminder that the elements of the signs follow a regular order, fire, earth, air, water, and not the drawing of the constellations. The bearer’s water would be rather that of knowledge, poured out so that everyone may benefit.
Which signs is Aquarius compatible with?
Gemini and Libra, its fellow air signs, share its taste for ideas, and Aries and Sagittarius would give it momentum. Leo, opposite, forms with it the axis of the heart and the collective. These pairings remain symbolic: the two complete charts, and above all each person’s Moon and Venus, shed far more light on a relationship. Two Aquarius people together would form, according to the manuals, a duo of friends as much as of partners.
Is Aquarius distant?
Tradition attributes to it a certain emotional distance, tied to air, the element of the mind, and to Saturn, the planet of restraint. This distance comes with great loyalty in friendship and real respect for others’ freedom. An Aquarius person can be very warm; the rest of the chart, the Moon and Venus first, says more about how they love.
