In tradition, Aries is the sign of the first step.
It brings together fire, which provides warmth and enthusiasm, the cardinal modality, which opens the seasons, and Mars, the planet of action. Ptolemy places it at the spring equinox, at the moment when days begin to win out over nights: hence the image of a sprout breaking through the earth and forging a path. An Aries person would react quickly, say what they think, and prefer trying to waiting for permission.
In everyday life, this shows in simple gestures: suggesting the restaurant when the table hesitates, taking on the file colleagues avoid, being the first to sign up for a training. The sign’s frankness is real: a disagreement is voiced face to face, without detours, and is often forgotten as quickly as it came. This speed is reassuring in an emergency; it can hurt a person who needed an hour to think.
The downside draws on the same source. Early enthusiasm fades when the task becomes long and repetitive; irritation rises in front of a slowness judged useless; the urge to win sometimes turns an ordinary discussion into a match. Astrologers remind us that Aries is a sign of beginning, not of duration: it does better to count on people who finish what they start, and to reread twice a message written in the heat of anger. Its opposite, Libra, shows what it learns with time: taking others into account before acting.

Aries in your life
In love
Tradition describes Aries as a sign that declares rather than hints.
Attraction shows without waiting: an invitation made that same evening, a clear message, the wish to share an activity rather than long conversations about what one feels. This spontaneity pleases through its sincerity; you always know where you stand with an Aries person.
The difficulty comes with time. When the relationship finds its rhythm, boredom can be mistaken for a lack of feeling, when it only signals the end of novelty. Arguments burst out loud and fade fast, which bewilders a partner who is slower to digest a conflict. What helps: proposing joint projects that renew the drive, and giving the other person time to respond before concluding that everything has been said.
At work
Aries would be in its place wherever something has to be launched: opening a market, starting a construction site, speaking first in a meeting.
Positions that reward responsiveness suit it, as do those where decisions are made in the field rather than after three sign-offs. Tradition also associates it with jobs of commitment, where nerve counts as much as skill: rescue work, fieldwork, starting a business.
The delicate point remains follow-through. Dashboards, follow-ups, and reports quickly bore it, and that is where mistakes slip in. A simple organization compensates for this trait: entrusting the finishing to a meticulous partner, breaking long projects into short steps with visible results, keeping a written list of what remains open. Facing a hierarchy, the sign’s frankness lands better when it rests on facts rather than on the mood of the moment.
In daily life
Over the course of the days, an Aries person likes things to move along: errands wrapped up in a quarter of an hour, furniture assembled on delivery day, a weekend booked on a whim.
Waiting weighs on them, and they gladly look for an activity that burns off their excess energy, from DIY to an improvised walk.
This temperament has its blind spots: paperwork that lingers, objects damaged by haste, impulse purchases regretted the next day. Tradition advises the sign to lean on what it naturally lacks, regularity: a slot reserved each week for boring tasks, a twenty-four-hour rule before any big expense, a storage system that requires no thought. Aries does not need to slow down everywhere, only where speed costs more than it earns.
Aries: decans, compatibility, and tradition
The 3 decans of Aries
Each sign divides into three decans of about ten days, each with its own nuance.
Two traditions give them a ruling planet or sign. Dates for 2026.

Aries (Mars)
Mars rules this opening third, whichever system is consulted: Chaldean faces and triplicities agree. Tradition would read the purest Aries here, quick to start, little inclined to wait. It would also be the third where frankness shows up most abruptly, and impatience most visibly.
Here, the Sun holds both rulerships: it belongs to the series of faces and rules Leo, the fire sign associated with this third. One would describe a prouder Aries, drawn to leading roles, who no longer seeks only to act but to be recognized for what they undertake.
The two systems diverge for the last slice: Venus in the Chaldean order, Jupiter through Sagittarius in the triplicities. On one side, a fire softened by the wish to please; on the other, a drive broadened to travel, ideas, and convictions. Authors see a more sociable Aries in it.
Fire calls to fire: tradition sees Leo and Sagittarius as Aries’ most natural partners.
The air of Gemini and Aquarius would keep its flame going, while the water of Cancer and the earth of Capricorn, in square, would slow its pace. Libra, opposite on the circle, holds up a mirror: the other person, their expectations, their compromises. These are tones of encounter, to be checked against two complete birth charts.

Mythology and tradition
The celestial Ram would be that of the Golden Fleece.
According to the account reported by Eratosthenes and Hyginus (De astronomia II, 20), Nephele sends a winged ram to save her children, Phrixus and Helle, threatened by their stepmother Ino. Helle falls into the sea that will bear her name, the Hellespont; Phrixus reaches Colchis, sacrifices the animal to Zeus, and hangs its fleece in a sacred grove, where Jason will come to fetch it with the Argonauts. The ram would then have been placed among the stars. Babylonian tablets gave this region of the sky a completely different name, that of the Hired Man.
Greco-Roman astrologers make it the leader of the zodiac. Manilius, in the 1st century, calls it the first of the signs, shining in its golden fleece, and entrusts it to the protection of Pallas; Ptolemy, in the Tetrabiblos, makes it the domicile of Mars and the place of exaltation of the Sun, at the 19th degree, because the day gains the advantage over the night there. The beginning of the tropical zodiac, the March equinox, is still called the “vernal point,” even though precession has moved it into the constellation of Pisces: the sign remains tied to the season, not to the stars.

In 2026, the Sun moves through Aries from March 20 (3:45 PM) to April 20 (3:39 AM), Paris time
Are you really Aries?
The Sun crosses the vernal point, the entry gate of Aries, on March 20 or 21, then moves into Taurus on April 19 or 20. These one-day differences come from the calendar, not from any uncertainty among astronomers. Does your birthday fall on one of these dates? Then you need your year, time, and place of birth. The table shows the precise moment for the current year and the next; the rising sign calculator also gives your Sun sign.
From March 20 or 21 to April 19 or 20, depending on the year. Aries’ first day is that of the spring equinox, which astronomers calculate to the minute; it swings between two dates because our calendar adds a day every four years to catch up with the solar year. A birth on a changeover day is checked with the year, time, and place: the table above gives the exact instants, Paris time.
What is the ruling planet of Aries?
Mars has been the ruler of Aries since Antiquity, in Ptolemy as in modern authors: unlike Scorpio, Aquarius, and Pisces, the sign has not received a modern ruler. Tradition also places the exaltation of the Sun here, at the 19th degree. Conversely, Venus would be in detriment here and Saturn in fall. These dignities serve above all for reading a full birth chart, where each planet takes on the color of the sign it crosses.
What are Aries’ flaws?
Authors cite above all impatience, a quick temper, and difficulty seeing through what has been launched. These are the downsides of its qualities: the speed that lets it start sometimes keeps it from listening, and the frankness that inspires trust can seem brutal. None of this is inevitable, nor specific to every Aries person: the Moon, the rising sign, and the other planets of the chart largely nuance the portrait drawn by the Sun alone.
Which sign does Aries get along with best?
Tradition puts forward Leo and Sagittarius, which share its fire, then Gemini and Aquarius, whose air would keep it going. These are affinities of character, never promises: two Aries can clash, and an Aries and a Cancer can get along wonderfully. For a couple, astrology compares two whole birth charts, Moon, Venus, and Mars first; each pair has its own page, on several levels.
Why is Aries the first sign of the zodiac?
Because the tropical zodiac, used in Western astrology, begins at the spring equinox: on that day, the Sun crosses the celestial equator, reaches 0° of longitude, and enters Aries. This choice goes back to the Greek astronomers, whom Ptolemy followed. It is seasonal: it does not depend on the constellation of Aries, from which the precession of the equinoxes has gradually moved this starting point over the centuries.
