What tradition says
Ptolemy makes Aries the sign of the Sun’s exaltation, and later tradition fixes the degree at the nineteenth, right inside this decan.
Astrologers saw in it the return of the light: in this period, days lengthen quickly in the Northern Hemisphere. The Sun would combine exaltation, face, and rulership by triplicity here, a rare concentration of dignities.
In medieval texts, this decan also receives an image; Abu Ma’shar, a Persian astrologer of the 9th century, gathers in his Great Introduction figures from Indian, Persian, and Greek traditions. In Ferrara, the painter Francesco del Cossa draws on them for the fresco of the month of March, in the Palazzo Schifanoia.
