What tradition says
The Sun finds no dignity in Capricorn, the sign where, at the solstice, it reaches its lowest height in the sky of the Northern Hemisphere; neither does Mercury.
It is nonetheless in these last degrees that later authors place the exact degree of Mars’s exaltation, the twenty-eighth, extending the energy of the preceding decan.
Abraham ibn Ezra, a 12th-century Jewish scholar, describes in his Beginning of Wisdom the figures of the decans according to several traditions, Indian and Greek among them. His books, translated into Latin and French as early as the Middle Ages, spread these images widely across Europe.
