The Sun in a birth chart
Every birth chart is organized around the Sun, just as the system named after it.
It is the luminary of the day: tradition entrusts it with consciousness, will, the sense of self, and whatever makes a person recognizable from a distance. Its sign gives the color of this identity, its house the ground where it seeks fulfillment. When someone asks “what’s your sign?”, they are talking about the Sun, even though the chart holds nine other planets.
In practice, the Sun shows in whatever gives you momentum with no outside pressure: the project that gets you up early, the cause you speak up for, the role you naturally take in a group. Placed in a fire sign, it would seek visible action; in earth, concrete achievement; in air, exchange and ideas; in water, connection and sensitivity. It is not the whole character: the Moon, the rising sign, and then each of the eight other planets strongly nuance this first portrait.
Its shadow side comes from the same light. A Sun that is poorly owned withdraws, waits for a permission that never comes, and lives through other people’s success; a Sun that is too strong overwhelms, brings everything back to itself, and has trouble sharing the stage. Tradition describes it as a king: it governs well when it illuminates, badly when it dazzles. Its position in the chart shows where this middle ground is sought.
