Mars in a birth chart
The red planet bears the name of the Roman god of war, the Ares of the Greeks.
Astrology entrusted it with everything that cuts through and sets things in motion: action, desire, courage, competition, anger, self-defense. In a chart, Mars tells how you get what you want, how you react when you are blocked, and what moves you more surely than reasoning does.
Its sign gives the way of acting. A fire Mars charges ahead and carries others along; an earth Mars moves slowly but never lets go; an air Mars fights with arguments; a water Mars acts in waves, guided by emotion. Its house indicates where the energy goes: career, partnership, possessions, collective causes. A Mars that looks weak does not mean an absence of will, rather a will that takes indirect paths.
The “malefic” label that tradition gave it is better understood today as a force to channel. A Mars that goes unrecognized turns into dull irritation, procrastination, or repeated conflicts; used well, it gives you the nerve to say no, to begin, and to protect. Reading it means spotting where your fighting spirit is useful and where it costs more than it brings. The aspects Mars forms with Venus, the Moon, or Saturn often say as much as its sign about this way of fighting.
