The South Node in a birth chart

The South Node has no motion of its own: it is always 180 degrees from the North Node, in the opposite sign and, except in the special case of unequal house systems, in the opposite house.

If the North Node is in Aries, the South Node is in Libra; if it is in the 4th house, the South Node occupies the 10th. The two form an axis that is always read together: you understand one only by looking at the other.

Modern astrology sees in it what a person can do without having learned it, the attitudes that come to them on their own and that have worked so far. A South Node in Virgo would give a sense of detail and service, in Sagittarius ease with ideas, in the 7th house a habit of adjusting to others. These facilities are real and precious. Some currents, called karmic, link them to past lives; others see in them simply the legacy of upbringing and background.

The delicate point is the security they provide. You return to them by reflex, even when the situation calls for something else. The work proposed is not to disown these strengths, but to use them as a support to move toward what the North Node indicates. A very organized person, for example, does not have to stop being so: they can put this rigor in the service of a project that is freer, more exposed, or riskier than those they usually choose.

The South Node in your life

In love

In intimacy, the South Node would describe the roles you readily replay: the one who takes care, the one who decides, the one who adapts.

These habits make beginnings easier but can lock the relationship into a known pattern. Spotting the role played by reflex makes it possible to try another, without giving up what is good in it. This reading remains a line of thought, not a verdict on a couple.

At work

At work, the South Node signals the skills that come without effort and that you have relied on for a long time.

They are a solid asset for starting out or getting through a busy period. The downside would be staying confined to them: refusing a new responsibility because the old one was more comfortable. The idea is to pass these know-hows on to a colleague to free up room, and time, for learning something else.

In daily life

In routine, the South Node shows in automatic habits: the same routes, the same dishes, the same responses to the same situations.

They save energy, and that is not a flaw. The placement would only indicate where these habits risk going in circles. Changing one detail a week, a route, a recipe, a schedule, is often enough to bring movement back.

The South Node: nuances and tradition

What tradition says

Medieval astrology called the South Node the “tail of the Dragon” and held it to be unfavorable, like a malefic: where it sat, something would diminish.

Nature and method

Nature and cycle of the South Node, without dignity: tradition gives dignities only to planets, not to points.

Frequently asked questions about the South Node

What does the South Node represent in a birth chart?

In the modern reading, the South Node represents strengths: spontaneous talents, habits, and ways of doing things that reassure. Its necessary partner, the North Node, placed exactly opposite, would indicate the direction to develop. Its sign and house show which strengths you already have, and where they risk becoming a comfort zone that is too narrow.

The South Node: planet or point?

Purely geometric, with neither matter nor light, the South Node corresponds to the Moon’s passage below the ecliptic, as it heads south. It can be calculated exactly and goes with eclipses, like the North Node. Not being a planet, it has no dignities in the tradition used by the site, neither domicile nor exaltation.
