Saturn in a birth chart
Nearly thirty years separate two passages of Saturn through the same place in the sky, and this slow pace inspired its role: it represents passing time, structure, rules, authority, discipline, and maturity.
In a chart, it indicates an area where things do not come by themselves. Ease is lacking at first, and sometimes delay too, then, through work, you become reliable there, often more solid than those for whom everything was easy.
Its sign, shared by a whole age group for two and a half years, describes the kind of demand a generation faces: material seriousness in earth, rigor of ideas in air, emotional restraint in water, mastery of impulse in fire. Its house is more personal. In the 2nd house, it would make money a matter of caution; in the 7th, it would make commitment serious and sometimes late; in the 10th, it would make a career a long construction. Between the ages of twenty-nine and thirty, the planet returns to the position it held at birth: tradition reads a moment of reckoning in this, announcing nothing specific.
Saturn’s downside is fear. Fear of lack, of failure, of judgment; a need to plan everything; harshness toward yourself or toward others. Modern astrologers, such as Liz Greene, have shown that it also marks the way out: where you once felt fear, you end up gaining a quiet authority.
