Neptune in a birth chart

The story of its discovery sums up its symbolism well.

In 1846, Urbain Le Verrier calculated the position of an invisible planet disturbing the orbit of Uranus; Johann Galle, who received his results in Berlin, found it that very evening, less than a degree from the announced spot. Neptune thus emerged from calculation before appearing in a telescope. Astrology made it the planet of what is sensed: dreams, art, music, spirituality, empathy.

With a trip around the zodiac in one hundred sixty-five years, Neptune stays nearly fourteen years in each sign: it describes the collective dreams of a generation, its ideals and its mirages. It is its house that makes it personal. In the 2nd house, money could become hazy or, on the contrary, serve an ideal; in the 5th, creation would be inspired; in the 10th, vocation would sometimes take an artistic or humanitarian turn. A tight contact with the Sun, the Moon, or Venus accentuates this sensitivity in the character.

Its downside is fog: not seeing what is before your eyes, idealizing a person or a situation, preferring escape to confrontation. Neptune asks you to keep one foot on the ground so that imagination feeds life instead of drawing you away from it: reread a contract signed in enthusiasm, ask the opinion of a clear-eyed friend, check before giving.

Neptune in your life

In love

In matters of the heart, Neptune brings tenderness, romanticism, and the desire for an almost spiritual union.

It can also veil the gaze: idealizing the other person, ignoring warning signs, devoting yourself to the point of forgetting yourself. A Neptunian relationship lives on music, knowing silences, and shared dreams. It benefits from being confronted with the facts from time to time, through a frank conversation or a concrete project, without losing its poetry.

At work

At work, Neptune favors careers of imagination and attention to others: arts, music, film, photography, support work, humanitarian action, jobs tied to water or the sea.

It brings inspiration and an intuition for an audience’s needs. It tolerates dry tasks and vague frameworks that let it drift poorly. A clear structure, deadlines set in advance, and an attentive contact protect its talent.

In daily life

Every day, Neptune shows in the need to escape: an hour of music, a daydream by the water, a novel devoured, a moment of meditation.

These pauses restore. They become a trap when they serve to put off paperwork and decisions endlessly. A simple ritual, at a fixed time, gives dreaming its place without letting it take over everything.

Neptune: nuances and tradition

What tradition says

Absent from ancient astrology, Neptune received in the 19th century the modern rulership of Pisces, which tradition gave to Jupiter; some authors lend it an exaltation in Cancer or Leo, without agreement among them.

Frequently asked questions about Neptune

What does Neptune represent in a birth chart?

Neptune represents imagination, ideals, sensitivity, and the impulse toward what goes beyond the individual, with its downside: haziness, illusion, escape. Its sign, shared for about fourteen years, speaks of a generation’s dreams. The sector it occupies in your chart indicates where inspiration comes most easily, and where you most readily idealize.

Which signs does Neptune rule?

Pisces, the mutable water sign of compassion and the imaginary, received Neptune as its modern ruler. Before its discovery in 1846, Jupiter governed it alone, and it remains the traditional ruler. The proposals for an exaltation of Neptune diverge too much to be kept; its detriment is deduced in the sign opposite Pisces, Virgo.
