Sun conjunction Mercury: the meaning
The planet closest to the Sun, Mercury follows it like a shadow: seen from here, their separation tops out at 28°.
In roughly one chart out of two, it shares the Sun’s sign, and the gap often falls under the 8° orb. Thought then takes on the direct color of identity. A person with Sun and Mercury in Leo would speak with warmth and flair; in Capricorn, with restraint and method. What you say and who you are resemble each other.
This fusion gives conviction. The person expresses themselves with the energy of who they are, and their ideas carry weight because they resemble them. They learn easily what fascinates them and like to pass it on. Tradition, however, observed that a Mercury too close to the Sun is “burned” by its light: thought would then lack distance from itself, like an eye too close to a lamp.
The downside would be subjectivity. Taking an intellectual disagreement as a personal challenge, defending an idea because it is yours, struggling to listen to a contrary argument: the conjunction makes these reactions easy. Learning to separate the idea from the person, to restate someone else’s thinking before answering, turns this fusion into a strength of persuasion.
