It corresponds to the heart of summer, to the hot, bright days when nature is at its peak. Fire gives enthusiasm and spontaneity, the fixed modality constancy and the will to last, and the Sun, its only ruler, the need to shine through who one is. Hence the royal image of the sign, popularized by the star Regulus, the “little king,” which marks the heart of the constellation.
A Leo person would love to give of themselves. They organize the birthday party, speak up to defend a colleague, throw themselves into an artistic project and invest in it without counting the cost. Their generosity is real, and their loyalty to those they love can be unwavering. They know how to set a mood, encourage, and give a group the push it lacks. Play, creation, and children often hold an important place in their life.
The downside lies in other people’s gaze. The need for recognition can become a dependence on compliments, and criticism, even when fair, wounds self-esteem. Pride sometimes keeps them from admitting a mistake or asking for help. The tendency to take up all the space can eclipse more discreet people. Astrologers set Leo against Aquarius, the sign of the collective: Leo would do well to remember that its light is worth most for what it lets others do.

Refusing, out of pride, to admit an obvious mistake.
Leo in your life
In love
A Leo person would be generous and demonstrative.
They like to charm, to surprise, to give, and live their feelings in the open. A relationship feels alive to them when it stays a little festive: outings, projects, gestures showing that you matter to each other. Their faithfulness, once committed, is often deep, and they protect their partner ardently.
What makes them fragile is the feeling of no longer being admired. A distracted partner, or one stingy with compliments, can dim them, and they may then look elsewhere for the recognition they lack. Tradition invites them to express their need for attention without turning it into a demand, and to hand the other person the stage from time to time: a couple where each shines in turn often lasts longer.
At work
Leo would be at ease in visible roles: team leadership, creative work, performance, teaching, communication, anything that calls for drawing others along or representing a project.
A Leo person brings confidence, energy, and real pride in a job well done. Their enthusiasm is contagious and can give new breath to a team that has run out of momentum.
The difficulty comes when their role is not recognized. A position with no visibility, a supervisor who claims their ideas, or a criticism in public can demotivate them for a long time. They gain by seeking concrete feedback on their work rather than compliments, by sharing the credit for a collective success, and by listening to objections without taking them as a personal challenge. Their natural authority then becomes real leadership, accepted by all.
In daily life
A Leo person takes care of their surroundings and their appearance.
They like hosting, organizing memorable moments, turning an ordinary meal into a celebration. Creative hobbies, music, theater, or photography give them a precious ground for expression. They are often the one who orchestrates family celebrations or reunions among friends.
Generosity can nevertheless cost dearly, in time as in money: gifts that are too big, too many invitations, commitments made to please. Tradition suggests the sign keep a share of its warmth for itself and choose where it wants to shine. A budget for pleasures, quiet evenings accepted without apology, a hobby practiced for oneself and not to be seen: so many ways to feed the fire without consuming it.
Leo: decans, compatibility, and tradition
The 3 decans of Leo
Each sign divides into three decans of about ten days, each with its own nuance.
Two traditions give them a ruling planet or sign. Dates for 2026.

Associated sign
Leo (Sun)
Saturn, the first face of Leo, contrasts with the Sun that the triplicities assign to it. Two portraits follow: a serious Leo, aware of its responsibilities, or a fully solar Leo, expressive and warm. In both cases, ambition would take the foreground.
Both schools entrust this middle of the sign to Jupiter, Chaldean face and ruler of Sagittarius. One would see here the most magnanimous Leo: optimistic, drawn to teaching, great causes, and travel, with a marked taste for grand gestures and successful celebrations.
Full agreement for the last slice: Mars is both the Chaldean face and the ruler of Aries. Tradition sees here the most combative Leo, who likes to take up a challenge before witnesses, to measure itself against others, to defend its colors with a flair that is sometimes excessive.
Leo would feel understood by Aries and Sagittarius, who burn with the same fire.
Gemini and Libra, in sextile, would bring it wit and conversation. Taurus and Scorpio, fixed signs in square, set their will against its own: power struggles are frequent there. Aquarius, opposite, is a reminder that the group matters as much as the individual. None of these affinities serves as a verdict.

Mythology and tradition
The celestial Lion would be the Nemean lion, the first of Heracles’ twelve labors.
In the version followed by Eratosthenes and then Hyginus (De astronomia II, 24), this beast with invulnerable skin terrorized the region of Nemea; Heracles, seeing that his arrows did not wound it, strangled it with his bare hands and afterward wore its hide like armor. The lion would have been placed among the stars in memory of this fight. Babylonian astronomers already saw a lion in this region of the sky.
For Greek astrologers, Leo is the Sun’s only domicile, because the sign corresponds to the hottest days of the year. Ptolemy names the main star Basiliskos, the “little king,” which became Regulus in Latin. In Manilius’s list of protecting gods, Leo falls to Jupiter, associated with Cybele, the mother of the gods. The symbol of the king of beasts, and the link with the central star of the system, fixed the sign’s royal image, taken up by the whole Western tradition.

In 2026, the Sun moves through Leo from July 22 (9:13 PM) to August 23 (4:18 AM), Paris time
Are you really Leo?
The Sun leaves Cancer for Leo on July 22 or 23, then moves into Virgo on August 22 or 23. Between those two days, there is no doubt; it is the changeover days that call for a calculation. A birth at noon and another at midnight, on the same day, may not belong to the same sign. The table gives the exact changeover, to the minute, in French legal time.
From July 22 or 23 to August 22 or 23. Leo covers the heart of summer, a little over thirty-one days. As with the other signs, the passage from one sign to the next does not take place on the same day every year, because of leap years. With the year, time, and city of birth, the calculation says without hesitation whether the Sun was already in Leo, still in Cancer, or already in Virgo.
Why is Leo ruled by the Sun?
Ptolemy assigns Leo to the Sun because this sign corresponds to high summer, when the heat is strongest in the Northern Hemisphere; the Moon receives Cancer, the neighboring sign. The Sun has only one domicile, and Leo has neither an exaltation nor a planet in fall. Saturn, ruler of the opposite sign Aquarius, would be in detriment here, which authors read as a tension between personal brilliance and the common rule.
Is Leo self-centered?
Tradition credits it with a need for recognition, which can become self-centeredness when it takes over. But the same trait also shows up as generosity, courage, and the wish to give to others. This is a symbolic tendency, not a judgment on people. The Moon, the rising sign, and the distribution of the planets nuance this portrait a great deal: a discreet Leo is no contradiction.
Which signs is Leo compatible with?
Aries and Sagittarius would share its ardor, Gemini and Libra its sociability. With Aquarius, its opposite, Leo forms a couple of contrasts, one turned toward the individual, the other toward the group. These affinities belong to symbolism: they announce neither harmony nor a breakup, and comparing two full charts says much more.
What is Regulus, the star of Leo?
Regulus is the brightest star in the constellation of Leo, almost exactly on the ecliptic, the Sun’s apparent path. Its Latin name means “little king,” a translation of the Greek Basiliskos used by Ptolemy. The ancient astrologers counted it among the royal stars. Today, because of precession, it lies at the very start of tropical Virgo, which illustrates the gap between signs and constellations.
