What it evokes
Contemporary crystal guides associate topaz with self-assurance: its often golden color and its brilliance make it a stone of optimism, to keep near you before launching into something.
The history of its name is murkier than the stone. For Pliny, topaz is green, found on an island in the Red Sea that mists hid from sailors, and Kunz points out that the topazius of the ancients referred rather to our peridot than to our topaz. Among the Burmese, he says, it held fifth place in a ranking of nine gems.
The November stone since 1912, it is slipped today into a bag or onto a finger: a warm hue to think of attempting something you have put off.
The traditions
- Rome, 1st century
Pliny praises topaz for its beautiful green, which was at first preferred to all other stones. According to Juba, it comes from an island in the Red Sea whose name is said to mean “to seek” because fogs hid it from sailors. It is, he adds, the largest of the precious stones and the only one that yields to the file.
Pliny the Elder, Natural History, XXXVII, 32 (Littré’s French translation) - Old name, different stone
Kunz explains that the topazius of ancient authors most often meant chrysolite, or peridot, and not our topaz, since Pliny describes it as greenish. He reports that this stone, set in gold, was said to dispel the terrors of the night.
Kunz, “Chrysolite” and “Topaz” (cross-reference) entries, breastplate list, 1913 - Burma
Among the Burmese, the nine gems of the naoratna are ranked by their value in occult practices: ruby first, then diamond or rock crystal, pearl, coral, and in fifth place topaz, ahead of sapphire. Kunz judges this rank unfair to sapphire.
Kunz, 1913, passage on the Burmese order of the naoratna

Nuances and sources
According to Kunz, the name topaz referred to peridot among the ancients. The “mystic topaz” of the trade is a topaz whose surface is coated with a colored layer. Recent lists link it to signs and chakras that vary by author, with no common ancient source.

Topaz: your questions
How can you tell a real blue topaz?
Commercial blue topaz is obtained by irradiation followed by heating: this process is common and must be disclosed. “Mystic topaz,” with its rainbow reflections, is a colorless topaz covered with a surface deposit. Always ask for the exact name and the process.
Is topaz fragile?
Its hardness, 8 on the Mohs scale, protects it from scratches, but its cleavage is perfect: a sharp knock could split it cleanly. Store it separately, avoid knocks and intense heat, and clean it with a soft cloth and lukewarm water.
What is the difference between topaz and citrine?
Topaz is a fluorine-bearing aluminum silicate, harder than citrine, which is a yellow quartz. The two have been confused because both can be yellow; only the composition, checked by a laboratory, truly tells them apart.
