What traditions associate with them

November is, with February, one of the steadiest months: topaz appears in all eight of Kunz’s old lists, which notes only one pearl as a variant. The 1912 list keeps topaz and citrine is added in 1952.

The verse for the months that Kunz reproduces invites you to prize the amber shade of topaz, emblem of faithful friends and loves. Modern crystal practice links citrine with luck and assurance.

November birthstone: your questions

What is the difference between topaz and the November citrine?

Topaz is the stone of the 1912 list, citrine an addition of 1952: two golden yellows, which the trade brought together. They are different minerals, as their respective profiles show. Tradition names no winner: choose the shade you like.

Why are so many topazes blue?

Because topaz comes in several colors: yellow, pink, blue or colorless, and the trade offers many in blue. This blue is often obtained by irradiation followed by heating, as the topaz profile details. The color the old verses had in mind is the amber one.
