What traditions associate with them

September belonged to chrysolite, our peridot, in six of Kunz’s eight old lists. Sapphire held April, seven times out of eight, and it wins September only with the 1912 list.

Kunz nonetheless writes that sapphire is the stone of autumn, the blue of that season’s sky, a symbol of truth, sincerity and constancy. He sees in it a tested affection more than a lively passion.

Modern crystal practice associates sapphire with focus and protection. It is therefore worn as a reminder of what is stable and reliable.

September birthstone: your questions

Why did sapphire move from April to September?

In the old lists, sapphire opens April and chrysolite September. The 1912 list shifted them: diamond takes April, sapphire September, and peridot becomes an alternative for August. Kunz sees in this a needless upheaval of the old order, inherited from the stones of the breastplate.

Is sapphire always blue?

The word sapphire here means blue corundum, the one tradition has in mind. The same mineral exists in other colors, the red one being called ruby. The shades, origins and possible treatments are given on the sapphire profile, with their sources.
