The stones of February
What traditions associate with them
February is unanimous: amethyst appears in all eight old lists that Kunz compares in 1913, without exception. The 1912 list changes nothing.
The Greek amethystos means “not drunk,” hence the old idea that it keeps the mind sober. Modern crystal practice associates it instead with calm and focus.
Kunz also reports a verse for the months that promises people born in February sincerity and peace of mind, if they wear an amethyst. In both cases, the stone serves as a support for an intention, never as a promise.
No stone has a proven effect on health: if you have a health concern, see a health professional.
February birthstone: your questions
Is amethyst the birthstone in every calendar?
Almost: it is the February stone in the Jewish, Roman, Arabic, Polish, Russian and Italian lists as well as in that of Isidore of Seville. Kunz notes only two isolated variants, hyacinth and pearl, each in a single list. It is the most complete agreement in the whole series of months.
Should I prefer amethyst to another purple stone?
The convention names amethyst, but nothing prevents you from choosing another stone whose shade speaks to you. Birth traditions are customs, not rules. If you hesitate, the amethyst profile explains what this stone really is and how to keep it beautiful without damaging it.
