Crystal meanings: stones and their traditions

Crystal healing is not a recognized therapy: it reads stones through traditions, alongside what each stone really is.

What crystal healing is

The word is recent, the practice very old: wearing a stone for what it represents. Modern crystal practice links each stone to intentions and reports virtues that traditions have attributed to it, from Pliny to medieval lapidaries to books of the late 20th century. Here, each page presents these associations for what they are: beliefs, named and dated. It then gives what the stone really is, its mineral, hardness, origin, imitations, and how to keep it looking good. No stone acts on the body: you choose one as a keepsake, to remind you of what you want to cultivate.

Reading a crystal page in three steps

  1. Meaning firstEach page opens with what the stone evokes in the traditions, in one sentence, then the intentions modern crystal practice associates with it.
  2. Sources nextPliny, the Bible, the 1912 list: each belief is reported with its author and date, and flagged when it still needs checking.
  3. The stone as it isMineral, hardness, origins, enhancements, imitations, and care: what you need to recognize a real stone and keep it intact.

Where these traditions come from

Stones have always carried stories. Exodus describes the twelve stones of the high priest’s breastplate, one for each tribe of Israel. In the 1st century, Pliny the Elder devoted an entire book to precious stones and reported, often mockingly, what the magi attributed to them. Medieval lapidaries extended these lists of attributed virtues. In 1912, American jewelers set the modern birthstone list, which George F. Kunz discussed the following year. The word “lithotherapy” spread with the New Age movement, which popularized the belief in a power specific to crystals.

What a crystal does not do

No study has shown any effect specific to stones. In 2001, a team at Goldsmiths, University of London, had eighty volunteers meditate with either a real quartz or a copy: many described the same sensations in both cases. A stone can accompany an intention; it replaces no medical care, advice, or action. The pages in this section therefore name no health condition and promise nothing.

Crystal meanings: your questions

Is crystal healing recognized?

No. No authority recognizes it as a method of care, and in 2005 the French health agency Afssaps banned the advertising of a center that credited stones with action on ailments, for lack of clinical or scientific evidence. Versana therefore presents stones as symbolic keepsakes, with their traditions and mineralogical facts, never as a way to act on the body.

How do I choose my stone?

Start from an intention, what you want to cultivate: calm, confidence, a fresh start. The “Which crystal is right for me?” tool suggests three stones that tradition associates with that intention, taking into account, if you wish, a color you like and your birth month. Nothing is sent or saved.

Do you need to cleanse or recharge a stone?

These gestures belong to crystal tradition, not to mineralogy: nothing measures a “charge.” If you practice them, first check that the method will not damage the stone: salt eats away at porous stones, water dissolves selenite, strong light fades amethyst. The “Care for my stone” tool gives the answer stone by stone.

Are the stones sold always natural?

No: many are heated, dyed, resin-stabilized, reconstituted, or manufactured. Most citrines are heated amethysts, dyed howlite is sold as turquoise, and moldavite is widely imitated. Each page lists the common enhancements and imitations; when buying, always ask the seller for the exact name.
