What it evokes

Modern crystal practice associates golden sheen obsidian with protection and confidence: gold, the color of the sun in many traditions, is said to be a reminder to show yourself without a mask.

The golden reflection is a property of the glass: according to Wikipedia, it comes from gas bubbles aligned by the flow of the lava, what is called “sheen obsidian.” The stone has nothing to do with gold. Obsidian itself has been known since antiquity: Pliny cites the author Xenocrates for its deposits, and Kunz reproduces an Aztec obsidian mirror kept in London.

It is taken as a support: a cabochon you turn toward a window, to recall a surge of confidence.

The traditions

  1. Rome, 1st century

Pliny cites Xenocrates, according to whom obsidian is found in India, in Samnium in Italy, and on the Ocean coasts of Spain. He adds that the use of the stone is older than people say, and that it was already confused with glass because of their resemblance.

  2. Ancient Mexico

Kunz reproduces an obsidian mirror kept at the British Museum, with its original cord of woven fiber. The caption specifies that the Aztecs and the ancient Mexicans used it for various purposes, and that its shape and size are those of the mirror attributed to John Dee.

  3. Modern crystal practice

Specialist sites present it as a stone of protection and confidence, whose golden reflection is said to be a reminder of light in the dark. No ancient text supports this reading, which starts from the look of the stone.

The real dangers of crystals

Nuances and sources

The golden reflection shows only at certain angles, and some sellers give the name golden sheen obsidian to ordinary black obsidian. There are also “silver” obsidians, with a white reflection. As for the chakras and signs, the lists contradict one another.

Gold sheen obsidian: your questions

Why does golden sheen obsidian shimmer?

According to Wikipedia, gas bubbles trapped by the lava, then aligned in layers during the flow, give some obsidians a golden reflection, called “sheen obsidian.” It is a play of light in the glass, which disappears when you change the angle. No gold powder is involved.

Is golden sheen obsidian sharp?

It is as brittle as glass: a knock is enough to chip it, and the splinters have very sharp edges. Store it away from hard objects, do not let it fall onto tile, and keep broken pieces out of children’s reach. A polished, intact piece can be handled without difficulty.

What is the difference from black obsidian?

It is the same stone, a volcanic glass, with a reflection added. For modern crystal practice, the black one is mostly a stone of the mirror and of grounding, and the golden one adds confidence. These nuances are recent readings; only the look of the stone really differs.
