Where these answers come from
The answers come from the properties of each stone: its hardness on the Mohs scale, its porosity, its sensitivity to water, heat, or light. Salt, for example, does not scratch a stone harder than itself, but salt water seeps into a porous stone and tarnishes a metallic one. When a point remains to be confirmed against a mineralogical source, the page flags it. When in doubt, a soft dry cloth does no harm to any stone.
Cleansing and charging: the tradition
Modern crystal practice attributes to stones a kind of “charge” that would need to be cleansed and then renewed: rinsing under water, a salt bath, incense or sage smoke, a night in the moonlight, a cluster of quartz, a flower-of-life pattern. These gestures belong to tradition; no measurement shows a charge that empties or fills. If you practice them, choose those your stone tolerates: moonlight and smoke harm no stone, while salt and water harm several.

Caring for your crystal: your questions
Can all stones be cleansed in salt water?
No. Salt water seeps into porous stones such as turquoise, lapis lazuli, malachite, or howlite, tarnishes pyrite, and slowly dissolves selenite. It does not bother quartzes, which are hard and non-porous, provided you rinse well afterward. The tool above gives the answer for each of the 62 stones in this section.
Does the sun recharge stones?
That is a belief of crystal practice, with no measurement to confirm it. On the other hand, strong, prolonged light really does fade some colored stones, such as amethyst, kunzite, rose quartz, or celestite. For these, prefer moonlight, incense smoke, or simply storing them in the shade.
