What it evokes
Modern crystal practice associates smoky quartz with grounding and protection: its brown to black tint evokes earth and solidity, and it is credited with the role of a symbolic bulwark against the tensions of the day.
This reading has several roots. Scotland made it its stone under the name cairngorm, after the Cairngorms mountains, and Kunz mentions Scottish superstitions about its attributed virtues, which could explain why it was used for divination. He also cites the smoky quartz sphere of Dr. John Dee, kept in the British Museum.
To use it, you keep it as a support: a smooth stone at the bottom of a bag, or on a hall table, to remind yourself to slow down before crossing the threshold.
The traditions
- Scotland, cairngorm
In his list of stones associated with countries, Kunz names cairngorm, smoky quartz, as the stone of Scotland, while Switzerland is represented there by clear quartz. The name refers to the Cairngorms mountains in the Highlands, where this brown variety of quartz was found.
Kunz (1913), Curious Lore of Precious Stones, list of national stones - 16th century, John Dee
Kunz points out that the divination stone of Dr. John Dee kept in the British Museum is a cairngorm, a sphere of smoky quartz. He supposes that Dee chose it because of the Scottish superstitions attached to this stone, charlatans seeking, he writes, to lean on beliefs already in place.

Nuances and sources
Very dark black quartz is sometimes called morion, and light brown quartz cairngorm, with no clear boundary between the two. The correspondences with the root chakra or Capricorn are modern and vary by author. Smoky quartz is not to be confused with obsidian, a volcanic glass.

Smoky quartz: your questions
Is a very black smoky quartz natural?
Not always. The brown to black tint comes from irradiation, which can be natural in the rock or induced in a laboratory on colorless quartz. A very deep, perfectly uniform black suggests artificial irradiation. The stone is still real quartz, but it is fair to ask the seller what they know.
Does smoky quartz fade with light?
Its tint can fade under strong, prolonged light, and high heat can alter it. Avoid the windowsill and radiators. A soft cloth and lukewarm water are enough to clean it, since it resists water and ordinary rubbing well.
What is the difference from black obsidian?
Smoky quartz is a crystal, hard and shiny, often brown. Black obsidian is a volcanic glass with no crystal structure, more fragile, with a sharp fracture. Both are dark and associated with grounding in modern books, but they are two quite distinct materials.
