What it evokes
Modern crystal practice associates ametrine with creativity and focus. Joining amethyst, credited with moderation, and citrine, credited with drive, it is said to be the stone that holds reflection and action together.
This reading follows from its color: the meanings attributed to each of its halves are added together. It is therefore recent, and we have not re-read any ancient text that describes this stone.
It becomes a marker: a stone on a desk, as a reminder to join idea and gesture.
The traditions
- Modern crystal practice
According to contemporary books, ametrine would combine the meanings of amethyst and citrine: the moderation of one, the drive of the other. According to them, it would be the stone of a considered creativity. This reading is recent and remains to be cross-checked against two books.

Nuances and sources
Many commercial ametrines are obtained by heating or irradiating amethyst, and synthetic ametrine exists: ask whether the stone is natural. Authors attribute different chakras to it, crown or solar plexus, depending on whether they focus on the violet or the yellow.

Ametrine: your questions
Is ametrine always natural?
No. There is natural ametrine, coming almost entirely from one mine in Bolivia (Anahí), amethyst heated or irradiated to obtain two colors, and synthetic ametrine. All are quartz and look alike to the eye. Ask the seller about the origin and the method of production; a gemological lab can settle it for an important piece.
What is the difference from amethyst or citrine?
It is the same mineral, quartz, of the same hardness (7): only the colors change. Amethyst is violet, citrine yellow, ametrine carries both in a single crystal. In modern crystal practice, it combines the readings of the two stones, which remains a recent construction.
Does ametrine withstand the sun?
It is best to avoid it: strong, lasting light can dull its colors, and heat alters them. Keep it away from sunny windows and radiators. A soft, barely damp cloth cleans it.
