What it evokes
Modern crystal practice associates clear quartz with focus and renewal: its transparency makes it the image of a clear mind, a blank page on which to start again.
This reading extends a very old fascination. The Greeks called it krustallos, “ice,” and Pliny thought it was born of intense freezing; Saint Jerome took up this idea, as Kunz reports. The widespread European practice of divination with the crystal ball then made it the stone of inner sight.
Today it is chosen as a support for an intention: setting a crystal on your desk to remember to clear space, or holding it in your hand at the start of the day to fix a priority. It is also credited with the role of amplifier of other stones, a contemporary belief with no ancient source.
The traditions
- Rome, 1st century
Pliny explains that crystal is born of a hard freeze, hence its Greek name meaning “ice.” He praises those from India, notes those from the Alps, which people go to fetch hanging from ropes, and records that the empress Livia dedicated to the Capitol a block weighing about a hundred and fifty pounds.
Pliny the Elder, Natural History, XXXVII, 9-10 (Littré translation) - Church Father and Christian symbolism
Kunz reports that Saint Jerome took up Pliny’s thesis: water hardened by cold, stone to the touch and water to the eye. Symbolically, crystal meant that those who pass through the doors of the Church must remain spotless and keep a pure faith.
Kunz (1913), Curious Lore of Precious Stones, “Rock-crystal” - Modern crystal practice
Contemporary books make it the stone of focus and clarity of mind, also used to amplify the intention carried by other stones. No ancient source supports this reading, which appeared with modern crystal practice.

Nuances and sources
Clear quartz is a colorless variety of quartz, but the word “crystal” also names the lead glass of tableware: do not confuse them. Pliny already knew of glass imitating crystal. Divinatory uses, such as the crystal ball, belong to a tradition distinct from crystal practice.

Clear quartz: your questions
How can you tell real clear quartz from glass?
Glass feels warmer to the touch than quartz, which seems cold for a long time, and it sometimes contains small round bubbles. Clear quartz shows instead fractures, veils, and angular inclusions. A perfectly pure ball with no flaws should raise suspicion. Only a laboratory test can settle it.
Can you leave clear quartz in the sun?
Clear quartz tolerates light, but beware of balls and crystals left in full sun on a windowsill: by concentrating the light, they can set fire to fabric or paper. Pliny already mentioned crystal balls receiving the rays of the sun. Keep it away from direct exposure instead.
What is the difference between clear quartz and Bohemian crystal?
Clear quartz is a natural mineral, limpid quartz. Bohemian crystal or lead crystal are manufactured glasses, enriched with lead or potash to sparkle more. They have neither the hardness nor the composition of quartz. On a label, check for the mention “rock crystal” or “quartz.”
