What it evokes

Recent books attribute tenderness and love to pink tourmaline: it is said to be chosen to give or keep a quiet affection.

This reading is recent: according to Kunz, in 1913, tourmaline had been a gem in Europe only since the 18th century. Asia had given it a role of rank earlier: among the stones of the Chinese mandarins, red or pink tourmaline, with ruby, marked the first rank. Wikipedia adds that the Empress Dowager Cixi loved pink stones.

It became an October birthstone in 1952: a modern reminder more than a tradition.

The traditions

  1. China, rank of the mandarins

Kunz publishes the list of stones that Chinese mandarins wore to mark their rank. At the head, red or pink tourmaline, ruby, and rubellite hold the first rank; coral comes second. He sees in this practices that were first religious or ceremonial, in which red stones are preferred.

  2. 1913, a recent gem

For Kunz, a gem known only since modern times seems out of place among the birthstones, which he would like reserved for ancient stones. The American list of 1912 nonetheless admits it as an October substitute; pink tourmaline joined in 1952 (the trade press says simply “tourmaline”).

  3. Name and varieties

According to the article, the name would come from the Sinhalese tōramalli, and red or pinkish-red elbaite is called rubellite. It writes that Cixi, in China, bought large quantities of pink tourmaline, for cut stones and carvings, from the Himalaya mine in San Diego County, California.

Nuances and sources

Pale pink is pink tourmaline, vivid red is rubellite, and the boundary depends on sellers. Many pink stones are heated or irradiated, which the site’s profile flags as something to check, and the trade sells pink glass or dyed rose quartz. Each author proposes their own signs and chakras.

Pink tourmaline: your questions

Pink tourmaline or rose quartz?

They are two different minerals. Rose quartz is almost always milky and hazy; pink tourmaline is clearer and more vivid, with fractures and inclusions of its own. A very vivid, even color should raise suspicion: the trade sells dyed quartz or pink glass. In doubt, a gemological lab settles it.

Does pink tourmaline fear sun or water?

According to the site’s table, neither water nor salt nor light damages it, but heat is to be avoided. So avoid the radiator and the scorching windowsill, especially as some pink stones are heated or irradiated. To clean it, lukewarm water and a soft cloth are enough.
