What it evokes
In modern crystal practice, lepidolite evokes calm and gentleness: its lilac color and glittering flakes make it, for recent authors, a stone for pausing, chosen as a reminder to slow down.
This reading comes from its look. The stone, a mica, is made of tiny flakes that shine in the light, hence its name, drawn from the Greek lepis, “scale.” No ancient lapidary describes it as a stone of intention, and Kunz mentions it only in 1913, in his lists of stones associated with first names.
It acts as a marker: a small polished piece on a desk or a shelf, which keeps the idea of a pause in view.
The traditions
- 1913: stones for first names
Kunz describes the pleasant custom of assigning a gem to each first name, and of pairing these stones with the birthstone and with that of one’s patron saint. In his lists, lepidolite is the stone of Lucy among women’s names and of Leo among men’s names.
G. F. Kunz, 1913 book on precious stones (Gutenberg 57978), lists “Gems for names” - Modern crystal practice
Recent books describe it as a gentle stone, for the passage between two stages. This image comes from its lilac shade, not from an ancient text.

Nuances and sources
Heart or brow chakra, Aquarius or another sign: the associations proposed, born in the 20th century, differ from book to book. The fact that it contains lithium belongs to mineralogy alone, and justifies no interpretation about the body.

Lepidolite: your questions
Why is lepidolite said to contain lithium?
It is a mineralogical fact: lepidolite is a lithium-bearing mica, and the most abundant of the lithium-bearing minerals, of which it is a secondary source. This fact has no demonstrated link with the stone worn as jewelry; Versana draws no conclusion from it about the body or mood.
Is lepidolite fragile?
Yes. Its hardness, 2 to 3 on the Mohs scale, makes it very soft, and its layered structure makes it flake apart. It can be scratched with a fingernail or a coin. Store it separately, wrapped, and keep it for pendants and objects you set down rather than for rings.
Does it tolerate light and moisture?
Water is not a problem in itself, but salt water and rubbing damage such a soft material. Direct sun is best avoided, for the sake of the color. Heat too. The safest approach is a soft, dry cloth, then storage in the shade.
