What it evokes
Recent books associate green tourmaline with renewal and creativity: its leaf green makes it the image of an idea taking root.
No ancient lapidary knows it: for Kunz, in 1913, it had been a gem only since the 18th century. Its name comes from Sinhalese, and the green variety is called verdelite. When heated, it attracts and then repels ashes, which earned it the nickname “Ceylon magnet.” Kunz notes it, in Brazil, under the name “Brazilian emerald.”
It is chosen as a marker to place near a project.
The traditions
- 18th century, arrival in Europe
This article writes that colored tourmalines from Ceylon arrived in large numbers in Europe, through the Dutch East India Company, as curiosities and as gems. When heated, the stone attracted and then repelled hot ashes, hence its nickname “Ceylon magnet.” The green variety of elbaite bears the name verdelite there.
Wikipedia (en), “Tourmaline” (secondary, named) - 19th century, the deposits
The article dates the discovery of tourmaline at Mount Mica, Maine, to 1821, and the first documented find in California to 1890, which became a major producer in the early 20th century. These dates show a young gem, without ancient memory: today’s symbolic readings were grafted onto its color.

Nuances and sources
The green of verdelite runs from leaf green to deep green, and the trade sells green glass in its place. Some green tourmalines are heated, which the site’s profile flags as something to check. Recent books place it at the heart or the throat, sometimes under a sign, without agreeing.

Green tourmaline: your questions
Verdelite or green tourmaline: are they the same thing?
Yes. Verdelite is the name of the green variety of elbaite, the most colorful tourmaline species; it is also written green tourmaline. The red and pink varieties are called rubellite, the blue one indicolite, and the colorless one achroite. The name changes, not the stone: ask the seller for the species and the original color, natural or enhanced.
Green tourmaline or emerald?
Emerald is a beryl, green tourmaline a quite different species, with a complex formula that contains boron. They look alike to the eye, so much so that Kunz mentions “Brazilian emerald” as a name for tourmaline. Emerald is generally rarer and costlier: a bargain-priced emerald is suspect. Only a lab settles it with certainty.
