Petrified wood meaning and properties

Petrified wood is the stone of deep time in modern crystal practice: an ancient tree whose substance has become stone.

The essentials

Petrified wood at a glance

For you, the memory of a tree turned to stone, to keep in view as a reminder that roots are built slowly.

A question to ask yourself

What do you wish to build slowly, without trying to go faster than its pace?

Something to watch

A sudden change in temperature can crack it: no direct heat source.

What it evokes

Modern crystal practice associates petrified wood with grounding and renewal. It keeps the shape of a trunk, its rings and its bark, and recalls what endures: patience and continuity are read into it.

This reading comes from the object itself more than from an ancient source. Petrified wood is no longer wood: its substance has been replaced by silica, hence its hardness. We have not re-read any ancient text about it.

It is chosen as a support for intention: a polished slice set on a shelf, to remind you to build step by step.

The traditions

  1. Name stones

In the list of stones associated with first names that Kunz reproduces, wood opal (wood-opal) corresponds to Walter. It attests only that this silicified material entered into this use of initial stones, not that a specific meaning was attributed to it.

  2. Modern crystal practice

In today’s crystal practice, it is tied to roots, stability, and transitions, because it joins a once-living being and a mineral. This reading is recent and remains to be cross-checked against two books.

Caring for it without damaging it

  • WaterYesA quick rinse in warm soapy water, then drying, does not damage it.
  • SaltYesMohs hardness 6.5–7: harder than salt (2.5), it can handle brief contact; rinse afterward.
  • SunYesNo known fading in daylight.
  • HeatAvoidA sudden change in temperature can crack it: no direct heat source.
  • Scratches and knocksResistantMohs hardness 6.5–7: it resists everyday scratches, but not sharp knocks.

Nuances and sources

“Fossilized wood” or “petrified wood” is a mineralized fossil, not a wood. Colors vary from brown to red and gray depending on the stones. The forms sold are many (slices, cabochons, spheres); names of origin and tree species are seller indications, rarely verifiable.

  • Mineralogical sources to review (Mindat, Handbook of Mineralogy).

Petrified wood: your questions

Is petrified wood still wood?

No. Its substance has been replaced by silica, microcrystalline quartz or opal, which has preserved the shape of the wood, sometimes down to the rings. That is why it is hard and heavy. It is therefore neither a wood nor a stone born from a single block: it is a mineralized fossil.

How can you recognize fake petrified wood?

Be wary of wood that is simply dyed or resin-impregnated, sold as stone: it is lighter, warmer to the touch, and scratches easily. Real petrified wood is hard and cold. Ask the seller for the exact designation, and for any dye.

Does petrified wood fear water or sun?

No: it tolerates water, salt, and sun alike. Only strong heat is to be avoided. Wipe it with a soft, damp cloth; go easy on knocks if the piece is thin or heavily cracked.
