Lava stone at a glance

What it evokes
In modern crystal practice, lava stone is linked to grounding: born of a cooled flow, it is said to recall the earth, solidity, and patience.
This reading comes from its origin. Lava stone is a volcanic rock, basalt riddled with gas bubbles, and not a crystal: its rough, dark, light surface contrasts with polished gems. No ancient tradition attributes a meaning to it, and Kunz does not mention it in 1913. The association with grounding is recent.
It serves, then, as a support: a raw stone to hold in the morning, to remember to steady yourself before starting the day.
The traditions
- Modern crystal practice
According to recent crystal books, lava stone is a stone of grounding and stability, linked to the fire of the earth and to the root chakra. No ancient text establishes it.
contemporary crystal books, in agreement - Contemporary use
Today it is used in bracelets of raw beads, to which some add drops of essential oil, the porous rock absorbing the scent. This is a use for decoration and fragrance, unrelated to any ancient tradition.

Caring for it without damaging it
- WaterAvoidPorous stone: water seeps in; a barely damp cloth, never soaking.
- SaltNoSalt water attacks it or lodges in it, and the grains can scratch its polish.
- SunYesNo known fading in daylight.
- HeatAvoidA sudden change in temperature can crack it: no direct heat source.
- Scratches and knocksResistantMohs hardness 5–6: it resists everyday scratches, but not sharp knocks.

Nuances and sources
In practice the name designates vesicular basalt, sometimes scoria, depending on the sellers. Beads sold in bright colors are dyed: natural lava is black or gray. The correspondences with Capricorn or the root chakra change from book to book.
- Mineralogical sources to review (Mindat, Handbook of Mineralogy).
Lava stone: your questions
Is lava stone really lava?
Yes, in the sense that it is a rock formed by a cooled volcanic flow, here basalt, riddled with gas bubbles. It is not a crystallized mineral but a rock, which is why its hardness, 5 to 6, is approximate. It remains light and rough, quite different from a polished stone.
Why are some lava stones colored?
Because they are dyed. The porous rock readily absorbs dyes, which give bright blue, red, or yellow: natural lava is black or gray. These tints can rub off on the skin or in contact with water. Ask the seller before buying.
Can you wet it or put it in salt?
Better to avoid it: its porosity retains water and salt, which can dull or damage the rock and its dyes. A dry cloth or a soft brush is enough. Daylight does not harm it; knocks, however, can chip the beads.
