What it evokes

Modern crystal practice associates black tourmaline with protection and grounding: it is seen as a kind of symbolic shield, to keep with you or near the entrance of the house.

This reading is recent. No ancient text speaks of it: Kunz, in 1913, even considers tourmaline a gem known only since the 18th century. Its look counts for more than its history: a dense, shiny black, with crystals striated like columns, which suggests solidity and weight.

It serves, then, as a marker: set it near the door, or carry it in your pocket, to remember to say no when it is needed.

The traditions

  1. 18th century

Kunz judges tourmaline out of place in the list of birthstones, because it is a gem known only in modern times, since the 18th century, whereas that list ought to contain stones worn since antiquity. Black tourmaline therefore has no ancient tradition.

  2. Modern crystal practice

In contemporary crystal literature, it is the great stone of protection, placed in a room or kept on you. None of this appears in an ancient text.

Nuances and sources

The books link it to Capricorn or the root chakra, depending on the authors: these correspondences are recent and vary. The mineralogical name of black tourmaline is schorl, by far the most widespread tourmaline species in nature.

Black tourmaline: your questions

Is black tourmaline dangerous?

No danger specific to this stone is known: schorl is a hard, stable silicate, with no special precautions for wearing or handling it. Warnings about a stone with “too strong” an energy or one that “wears out” belong to belief: no measurement confirms them. Just avoid putting it in your mouth and breathing its dust.

How can you tell a real black tourmaline?

A natural crystal is striated lengthwise and has a rounded triangular cross-section. It is brittle across its length: it fractures cleanly. Molded black glass is perfectly smooth, without striations, and feels warm. Many small polished stones are glass: ask for the exact name.

Can you put it in the sun, in water, or in salt?

Yes: its hardness, 7, and its stability leave it indifferent to water, salt, and light. Avoid knocks on a hard floor, since a striated crystal can snap cleanly, and sudden temperature swings.
