What it evokes

For modern crystal practice, amazonite goes with speech and calm: it is said to be chosen before a difficult conversation, to express yourself steadily and to listen to the other person.

This reading comes mostly from its color, that cool blue-green that recalls water and sky. The stone is also very old in jewelry: Kunz mentions “Amazon stones” in Egyptian necklaces of the 1st century, and other sources trace it further back. No ancient text attributes a particular meaning to it, and its name, drawn from the Amazon, rests on a possible error: we do not know whether the stones found there were amazonite.

It serves, then, as a support: a calm color before your eyes to remind you to choose your words.

The traditions

  1. Egypt, antiquity

Kunz reproduces Egyptian necklaces of emeralds, rock crystal, and “Amazon stones,” one of them dated to the 1st century CE. Wikipedia recalls that Bronze Age Egyptians mined it at Gebel Migif and that no ancient text mentions it.

  2. Modern crystal practice

According to recent crystal books, it is a stone of communication and harmony, often linked to the throat and to sincere expression. These associations are recent: no ancient text supports them.

The real dangers of crystals

Nuances and sources

Depending on the authors, it is linked to the throat or the heart among the chakras, and sometimes to Virgo or Aquarius: these correspondences are modern and diverge. The cause of its color remains debated among lead, water, and iron, and not the copper long supposed.

Amazonite: your questions

Can amazonite go in drinking water?

No, avoid it. A study by the German institute EPI, published in 2021, measured in one sample a release of lead in an acidic medium above the European limit for toys. Drinking water in which a stone has soaked has no justification: wear the stone, without putting it in a drink or in your mouth, and wash your hands after handling stone dust.

How can you tell a real amazonite?

Natural amazonite shows white or pale streaks, called perthites, and a slightly uneven color. A very uniform or overly bright tint should raise suspicion, since it is sometimes waxed or coated. A laboratory can confirm the species. Ask the seller whether the stone has been processed.

Is amazonite fragile?

Its hardness, 6 to 6.5, resists everyday scratches, but it has easy cleavages: a sharp blow can split it. Store it apart, away from harder stones, and wipe it with a soft, slightly damp cloth, without ultrasonic cleaning.
