What it evokes

In recent books it is said to be associated with gentleness and speech: it is said to help you approach an exchange gently, or to keep in mind the image of still water.

This reading is brand new, like the stone. Larimar is known only in one region of the Dominican Republic, near Barahona, and its name dates from 1974: it joins a first name, Larissa, to the Spanish word for sea. There is therefore no ancient tradition.

It is worn as a memory of the shore: a blue that evokes the sea, to give yourself a quiet moment.

The traditions

  1. 1974: rediscovery and naming

According to Wikipedia, Miguel Méndez and Peace Corps volunteer Norman Rilling found the stone again in 1974 on a beach at the foot of the Bahoruco mountain range. Méndez named it “larimar,” from Larissa, his daughter’s name, and mar, the Spanish word for sea.

  2. Modern crystal practice

According to recent books, it is the stone of water, gentleness, and peaceful expression. These readings follow its color and have no ancient source: Kunz, in 1913, does not mention it.

Nuances and sources

According to Wikipedia, the Dominican mining archives hold a mining application filed in 1916 by Father Miguel Domingo Fuertes Loren, parish priest of Barahona, and refused. Its signs and its chakra, throat or heart, change from one book to another.

Larimar: your questions

Why does larimar exist only in the Dominican Republic?

It is a blue variety of pectolite, whose color comes from a little copper. The known deposits of this quality are near Barahona, on the island’s south coast, which makes it rare. Elsewhere, pectolite is most often white or gray, hence the need to be wary of a “larimar” of another origin.

Does larimar fade in the sun?

Yes: long, bright exposure to light can lighten its color. Store it out of daylight when it is not adorning your neck. It also scratches easily, since its hardness lies between 4.5 and 5: wipe it with a soft cloth and store it apart.

How can you tell a real larimar?

A natural larimar shows irregular patterns of blue, white, and sometimes gray, like waves. A plain, overly bright blue suggests glass or dyed pectolite instead. Only a laboratory can certify the origin: ask the seller for the exact name and the provenance.
