What it evokes

In recent crystal books, it stands for direct speech: it is said to be chosen to express yourself without detour, or to keep an idea clear when a conversation gets complicated.

This reading is recent. Its name comes from the Greek kyanos, “dark blue,” and its elongated bladed form, straight like blades, feeds the image of speech that goes straight to the point. No ancient text assigns it a role, and Kunz does not discuss it in 1913.

Wearing it is giving yourself a discreet marker: a frank color to remember to state your view, with consideration.

The traditions

  1. The name

The name comes from the Greek kyanos, “dark blue,” like the word cyan. The mineral is also called disthene. Its hardness depends on direction: about 5.5 along the blades, 7 across. This is the trait mineralogists use to recognize it.

  2. Modern crystal practice

According to contemporary crystal books, it is a stone of frank speech and alignment, of which it is often said that it “never needs cleansing.” This reading is recent and has no ancient source.

Nuances and sources

Signs and chakra, throat or brow, vary from book to book. Under the name “kyanite” you also find black or green blades; the spelling “cyanite” is equivalent, and “disthene” is the old name of the same mineral.

Kyanite: your questions

Why is kyanite fragile when its hardness is high?

Its hardness varies with direction: about 5.5 along the blades, 7 across. It also has a perfect cleavage, meaning planes along which it splits cleanly under a blow. Keep it isolated, away from any knock, and prefer a raw crystal or a polished stone to a highly exposed piece of jewelry.

Is kyanite cleansed with water?

Water, salt, and light do not harm it. The idea that it never has to be cleansed is a belief of modern crystal practice, with no measurement to confirm it: if you clean your stone, it is to remove dust, with a soft cloth or a little lukewarm water.

How can you tell a real kyanite?

A natural kyanite shows elongated blades with parallel striations, of an often uneven blue, with paler zones. A plain, shiny blue, with no bladed structure, suggests glass or a dyed stone instead. A stone cut as a uniform blue cabochon calls for caution.
