What it evokes
In modern crystal practice, sunstone is linked to confidence and luck: it is said to be chosen for a day when you want to be seen, speak up, or try something.
This reading comes from its sparkle. Tiny flakes of copper or iron enclosed in the stone throw back the light like sparks, hence the golden, red, or orange glint compared to the day star. Pliny already mentions a “gem of the sun” that casts brilliant rays, though it cannot be identified with today’s stone. Kunz names it the stone of Sunday.
It is worn in support of an intention: a piece of jewelry or a small pebble to touch before starting out.
The traditions
- Rome, 1st century
Pliny mentions a “gem of the sun”: white, it throws brilliant rays in a circle, like the star whose name it bears. Nothing indicates that it is today’s feldspar, whose color is orange or reddish: only the comparison with the sun links the two.
Pliny the Elder, Natural History, XXXVII, 67 (Littré translation) - 1913: the stone of Sunday
Kunz draws up a table of seven phenomenal stones, one per day: sunstone receives Sunday, the day of the sun, moonstone Monday, cat’s-eye Thursday, and labradorite Saturday.

According to recent crystal books, it is a stone of self-confidence, joy, and luck, often suggested to people who want to assert themselves. This reading is recent and rests on no ancient text.

Nuances and sources
The expression “sunstone” also designates, in accounts of medieval Nordic navigation, another stone, a calcite: do not confuse them. The correspondences with Leo or the solar plexus chakra are modern and differ from book to book.

Sunstone: your questions
Where do the flecks in sunstone come from?
They are tiny flakes of native copper or iron oxides such as hematite and goethite, aligned within the feldspar. They throw back the light at certain angles: this is aventurescence. Oregon sunstone, in varied colors, contains native copper. The finer and more numerous the flakes, the more even the glint.
What is goldstone?
It is a manufactured glass mixed with copper powder that imitates sunstone: its sparkle is very regular and its color uniform, often orange-brown or blue. A natural stone shows a more irregular glint. The seller must state “glass” or “goldstone”: if in doubt, ask for the exact name.
Can you leave it in the sun?
It tolerates daylight without fading. Still, keep it away from strong heat and from knocks, since its easy cleavages can split it. To clean it, a soft damp cloth is enough.
