What traditions associate with them

June is the most disputed month in the old lists: of Kunz’s eight, emerald and agate appear four times, chalcedony three, pearl only once. The 1912 list chooses pearl, with moonstone as the alternative.

Kunz judges that pearl is not a stone and proposes wearing it as a jewel that is an emblem of purity. He would have preferred asterias to moonstone.

Modern crystal practice associates moonstone with renewal and love. In 1952, alexandrite was added to the June list.

June birthstone: your questions

Is a pearl really a stone?

No: it is an organic material, produced by a mollusk. Kunz himself writes in 1913 that it should not be among the birthstones. The lists kept it for June all the same, with moonstone as the alternative, which shows the weight of custom over mineralogical logic.

Which of the three June stones should I choose?

The 1912 list gives pearl and moonstone as the alternative; alexandrite is the 1952 addition. None outranks the others. Choose according to the color and the jewel you want to wear: tradition sets no preference.
