The stones of April
What traditions associate with them
Diamond is a late adoption. Kunz observes that it appears in no birthstone list before the previous century: in his eight lists, April belongs mostly to sapphire, present seven times, and diamond appears only twice.
The late lists place it in April, and the 1912 list makes it official. In Kunz, the little verses for this month make it an emblem of innocence. Its Greek name, adamas, is often translated as “untamable.”
Kunz regretted this choice and proposed reserving diamonds for the setting around the stone of the month. Its profile details its traditions and its care.

April birthstone: your questions
Has diamond always been the April stone?
No. In the old lists compared by Kunz, April goes to sapphire, except for two late lists, the Polish one and the one running from the 15th to the 20th century, which choose diamond. It is the 1912 list that establishes diamond as the sole stone of the month.
Can I wear sapphire for an April birthday?
Nothing forbids it: sapphire was the April stone in almost all the old lists before moving to September in 1912. The verses for the months cited by Kunz, moreover, offer a choice between diamond and sapphire. Here, tradition leaves the decision to your taste.
