The stones of January
What traditions associate with them
January is the steadiest month in the old lists: of the eight that Kunz compares in 1913, seven give garnet, and hyacinth appears only as a rival. The 1912 list confirms it.
Modern crystal practice associates garnet with love and trust: a stone you might choose to mark a commitment or to give yourself courage again.
This reading is old. In the verses for the months that Kunz reproduces, the garnet of January is presented as a token of constancy, sincere friendship and faithfulness. Today, this dark red jewel serves mostly as a discreet memory of one’s promises.

January birthstone: your questions
Why is garnet the January birthstone?
Because almost all the old lists that Kunz compared place it there: seven out of eight, from the Jewish list to those of the Arabs, the Romans and the Poles. The list adopted in Kansas City in 1912 simply extends this agreement, which is rare among birthstones.
Does a birthstone garnet have to be red?
In the birthstone tradition, red garnet is the one meant, the shade of the old lists and of Kunz’s verses. The garnet profile details the other colors the trade offers. Choosing another one contradicts no rule: the convention is a custom, which everyone adapts to their own taste.
