December birthstone: turquoise, lapis lazuli, zircon
The December birthstone is turquoise, a blue-green that modern crystal practice regards as a support for protection and speech.

For you, a winter blue that evokes the sea and the pale sky, and the wish to say what really matters.

What traditions associate with them
Ruby held December in six lists out of eight in Kunz. Turquoise appears in the Polish and Russian lists, before the 1912 list installs it there, with lapis lazuli as the alternative.
Kunz points out that lapis lazuli is the “sapphire” of the high priest’s breastplate in the corrected translation: a very ancient stone. Zircon is added in 1952 and tanzanite in 2002.
Modern crystal books associate turquoise with protection, lapis lazuli with dialogue and attention, tanzanite with renewal. Kunz himself would have kept turquoise for summer: in winter, he writes, people look for warmth instead.

December birthstone: your questions
Why does December have so many stones?
Turquoise is the main stone of 1912 and lapis lazuli its alternative. Zircon arrives in 1952 and takes the place of lapis lazuli, then tanzanite is added in 2002. The current list therefore has three, which makes December one of the fullest months.
Is tanzanite an ancient stone?
No: it enters the December list only in 2002, and has no connection with the traditions of the breastplate or of Revelation. Its origins and what is said about it today appear on its profile, kept separate from the history of the lists.
