Signs and constellations: the tropical zodiac

The zodiac of Western astrologers is said to be tropical: it starts from the vernal point, the Sun’s position at the March equinox, and divides the ecliptic into twelve sectors of 30 degrees.

Ptolemy, in the 2nd century, already based the signs on the seasons: Aries would open spring, Cancer summer, Libra autumn, and Capricorn winter.

The constellations carry the same names, but they no longer coincide with the signs. The precession of the equinoxes slides the vernal point along the stars, at about one degree every 72 years: over two thousand years, the gap reaches almost a whole sign. Indian astrology prefers a sidereal zodiac, anchored to the fixed stars; the Western tradition keeps the seasons, which explains why the same question gets two different answers.

Frequently asked questions about zodiac signs

How do I find my zodiac sign?

You only need to know which sign the Sun was in on the day you were born. In the vast majority of cases, the day alone gives the answer: a May 5 birthday is always Taurus. Around the 20th of each month, the Sun changes signs, and the moment of that change varies from year to year. The tool on this page calculates the Sun’s position for your date and asks for the time only when it is needed.

Why does my sign change from one website to another?

Most often, because the site uses a fixed table, such as “Aries from March 21 to April 20,” without taking the year into account. A birth on April 20 can thus fall in Aries one year and in Taurus another. Some sites also follow the sidereal zodiac, shifted by about 24 degrees. Here, the zodiac is tropical and the Sun’s position is calculated for the exact date.

Do I need my birth time to know my zodiac sign?

Rarely. The time matters only if your birthday coincides with the moment the Sun crosses the boundary between two signs that year. On that day, a morning birth and an evening birth can belong to two different signs. Without the time, the tool gives both possibilities and the precise moment of the changeover; with the time, and the place if the birth took place outside France, it settles the question.

What is the tropical zodiac?

It is the zodiac based on the seasons, the one used in Western astrology. Its starting point, 0° Aries, is the Sun’s position at the March equinox; each sign then covers 30 degrees of the Sun’s apparent path. It does not follow the stars: the constellations of the same name have shifted with precession. The sidereal zodiac, used in India, makes the opposite choice.
