How is it calculated?
The Sun enters Cancer at a precise moment, legal time in Paris: before, Gemini; after, Cancer.
Why the change does not always fall on the same day
The word solstice comes from Latin and means roughly “the Sun stands still.” For a few days, the point on the horizon where the Sun rises stops moving north, then reverses. Astronomers fix the exact moment when its declination is greatest: it is also the moment it enters Cancer, 90 degrees from the vernal point.
As with the March equinox, this moment does not fall on the same day every year. The calendar counts whole days and shifts the phenomenon from one summer to the next, then corrects it with the leap year. In France, daylight saving time adds a two-hour difference from universal time; a solstice occurring just before midnight in universal time therefore falls the next day in Paris. In France, the Fête de la Musique, fixed on June 21, does not follow these variations: it coincides with the solstice only in certain years.
For a June birth, the grid is enough to decide. Days far from the solstice pose no problem; for those around it, you need the year and the time.
