How is it calculated?
The Sun enters Libra at a precise moment, legal time in Paris: before, Virgo; after, Libra.
Why the change does not always fall on the same day
The September equinox is the exact counterpart of the March one: the Sun crosses the celestial equator and passes into the southern hemisphere of the sky. Libra begins at that moment, 180 degrees from the vernal point. The sign’s symbol, the two scale pans, would recall, according to tradition, the equality of day and night on that date.
In reality, the equality is not quite exact: atmospheric refraction makes the Sun appear a little before its true rising, so that day is slightly longer than night on the day of the equinox. This does not matter for the sign: only the Sun’s position on the ecliptic counts, calculated by the ephemerides without regard to what the eye sees. The true equality of day and night occurs a few days later, on a date that depends on latitude; astronomers sometimes call it the equilux.
From one autumn to the next, the equinox slides by a few hours with the calendar, and the grid keeps a record of it over 90 years. In the days around it, set the time on the certificate against the moment shown. You move from a mutable earth sign, turned toward work well done, to a cardinal air sign, turned toward relationship: two ways of approaching autumn that tradition likes to contrast.

Frequently asked questions about the September zodiac sign
What is the zodiac sign for a September birth?
Virgo until the autumn equinox, Libra afterward. This equinox arrives in the last ten days of the month and its time changes every year. For a birth between September 1 and 20, or in the very last days of the month, the sign can be read from the date; for the days of the equinox, consult the grid.
Born on the day the sign changes in September: Virgo or Libra?
Before the moment of the equinox, the Sun is still in Virgo; after it, it is in Libra. This moment appears, year by year, in French legal time. For a birth outside mainland France, the time zone conversion is done automatically by the calculator from the city, without you having to look up the offset.
Why does Libra begin at the equinox?
Because the tropical zodiac is built on the seasons: each of the four cardinal signs opens a season, at the two equinoxes and the two solstices. Libra opens autumn in the Northern Hemisphere. Ancient authors linked its scale pans to the balance of daylight and night hours, an image taken up by the whole tradition.
