How is it calculated?
The Sun enters Pisces at a precise moment, legal time in Paris: before, Aquarius; after, Pisces.
Why the change does not always fall on the same day
The Sun returns to the same point of the zodiac every 365 days, 5 hours, and 49 minutes or so. The calendar, for its part, knows only whole days. Three years out of four have 365 days: the changeover then slides about six hours later. In the fourth year, February 29 makes up the delay and brings the moment back by almost a full day.
February is therefore the month where the correction takes place. A birth just before the changeover in a leap year can find itself, the following year, on the same date but under Pisces, or the reverse. The Gregorian calendar refines the rule further: century years are leap years only if they are divisible by 400. 1900 was not, 2000 was, 2100 will not be. Without this rule, introduced in 1582, the seasons would have kept drifting slowly through the year, as under the Julian calendar.
The result looks like a sawtooth: four years of gradual shift, then a jump back. That is the pattern the grid of years shows, further down. A birth on February 29 is always Pisces: the Sun has already left Aquarius a few days earlier, whatever the year. The doubt applies only to the days at the boundary, where the Sun crosses 330 degrees of longitude.

Frequently asked questions about the February zodiac sign
What is the zodiac sign for a February birth?
The first weeks belong to Aquarius, the end of the month to Pisces. Between the two, the date of the changeover moves forward or back depending on the year’s place in the leap-year cycle. Outside those days, no time is needed; for them, the grid shows the precise moment the Sun changed signs.
Born on the day the sign changes in February: Aquarius or Pisces?
The birth time decides. For each year, the page shows the exact moment the Sun reaches 0° Pisces, in French legal time. A birth before that moment remains Aquarius, a birth after it becomes Pisces. If the time is missing, a family clue, such as “in the middle of the night” or “at lunch,” is sometimes enough.
What sign is a February 29 birth?
Pisces. February 29 exists only in leap years, and in those years the Sun has always crossed the boundary between Aquarius and Pisces a few days earlier. Celebrating your birthday on February 28 or March 1 changes nothing about the sign: it depends on the Sun’s position at the moment of birth, not on the birthday date.
Why does the sign changeover move forward or back?
Because the solar year does not come out even: about 365 and a quarter days. Each ordinary year pushes the moment of the changeover back by about six hours; the leap year brings it forward by almost a whole day. Over a century, the rule for century years adds a small extra drift, visible when you compare the 1940s with the 2020s.
