What tradition says
Mars is here in its own domicile, and its strength would be complete.
With the 1st decan of Scorpio, it is one of only two cases where a sign opens with its own ruler in both systems at once. William Lilly, in Christian Astrology, grants only one point to the face, the most modest of the essential dignities; here, it simply doubles a dignity that is already strong.
The Chaldean series begins at this spot: Mars, then the Sun, Venus, Mercury, the Moon, Saturn, Jupiter, and so on through to Pisces. Astrologers of the Hellenistic era are said to have chosen Mars to open the cycle because it already rules Aries, the first sign of the seasons. The loop closes thirty-six decans later, on Mars again.
