Soulmate at a glance
For you, the idea can help you recognize what you share with a person, as long as you do not ask them to fill every gap.
What, in your happiest bonds, gave you this feeling of accord?
Neither a perfect person who would fill every need, nor a meeting fixed in advance that you could simply wait for without living.

What the word refers to
A soulmate is the person with whom rapport seems deep and natural: you understand each other without long speeches, you share what matters, and the other’s presence soothes. In everyday use, the word mostly refers to a couple, sometimes to a very close friendship.
The image is very old. In Plato, Aristophanes tells how humans, at first double, were cut in two and look for their other half; the Talmud speaks of a destined person, whom Yiddish calls bashert; a Chinese legend ties a red thread between those who are meant to be united. The English word soul-mate appears in 1822 from the pen of Coleridge.
What the authors say
In the Symposium, Aristophanes tells how the first humans were double, with four arms, four legs, and two faces. Zeus cut them in two; ever since, each half is said to search for the one it lost. This is his way of explaining love: the desire to become whole again.

Yiddish calls the person thus promised bashert, “destined,” a word still used to speak of the right meeting.

The thread is tied at the ankles in the Chinese account, at the little finger in its Japanese version.

The French “âme sœur” expresses the same kinship: a soul that would be of the same family as yours.

| What you feel | What the authors say | What you can observe |
|---|---|---|
| The feeling of understanding each other effortlessly. | The regained half of Aristophanes’ myth. | Whether this rapport holds up through disagreements, or fades at the first conflict. |
| The impression that this meeting was meant to happen. | The destined partner, bashert, of whom the Talmud speaks. | What you build together, week after week, beyond the moment you met. |
| The fear of letting the right person slip by. | A single half per being, in Plato’s account. | Whether this fear pushes you to stay in a bond that does not suit you, or to flee one that does. |
One small stepWrite down three values that matter to you in a couple, then see whether your current bond respects them.

What psychology studies
The idea of a soulmate matches what psychologist C. Raymond Knee calls destiny belief: there would be a person who fits you, to be found rather than built. His work compares it with growth belief, for which rapport is built. The first can make you harsher at the first snag, the second more patient; neither says who is destined for you.

Soulmate: your questions
How do I recognize my soulmate?
No reliable criterion allows you to recognize one, and Versana offers none. People who use the word speak of a natural rapport, quick trust, and shared values. What can be verified is behavior: respect for your choices, reciprocity, the possibility of disagreeing without fear.
Can you have more than one soulmate?
Plato’s myth knows only one half per being, but modern usage is looser: many people speak of a soulmate for a friend, a brother or sister, or several successive loves. Nothing requires you to think that only one person in the world could suit you.
What does numerology say about the soulmate?
No calculation points to a soulmate. The love compatibility tool sets your two life paths and your names side by side: points of agreement, differences to learn to live with. It feeds the conversation between two people; it does not say whether someone was promised to you.
And your connection: how is it lived?
