Each pair of life path numbers has its own page: what brings the two numbers together, what needs adjusting, and an idea for two. Click the square where your two numbers meet.

The three criteria

First names, life paths, Expression numbers: what each one says

Each criterion compares one number from each person; the affinity level combines them according to what they say about life as a couple.

  • weighs the least

    First names

First names give each person’s active number. You add up the letters of the first given name. This number describes the person as those close to them experience them: their reflexes, their way of going about things, their morning mood. It is the criterion for shared daily life.

  • weighs moderately

    Birth dates

Birth dates give the life path numbers. They describe each person’s road, the situations that come back over the years. Compared, they show whether the two roads head in the same direction, which matters for any long-term project.

  • weighs the most

    Birth surnames

Birth surnames, together with first names, give the Expression numbers. This is the criterion used by the personalized reading to describe the climate of a relationship: how two characters meet, respond to each other, and sometimes clash.

The level

How the level is calculated

Step one: any number above 9 is reduced to a single digit. An 11 counts as a 2, a 22 as a 4, a 33 as a 6. The two resulting values are then compared.

Three cases arise. A match: the two numbers are identical. Harmony: they appear together in Fermier’s harmony table, which pairs 1 with 3, 5, 6, and 9, for example. A contrast: every other combination, such as 1 and 4 or 2 and 3.

Each criterion is read according to its case: a match and harmony carry more weight, a contrast a little less, though never zero. Harmony ranks above a match, because two identical numbers understand each other right away but have no counterweight. The affinity level combines the readings of the available criteria. With first names alone there is only one comparison: the tool then gives a level in words, with no further detail; with dates and full names, it has three. The result always appears with the detail of each criterion, so that you know where the level comes from and what it covers.

Your questions

Frequently asked questions about compatibility

How can you tell if you’re compatible in numerology?

You compare the two people’s numbers, criterion by criterion. Each person’s first name gives their active number, the birth date their life path number, the full name their Expression number. For each criterion, the two numbers are in a match, in harmony, or in contrast. The result is not a verdict: it shows where the match comes easily and where it takes conscious effort. Real exchanges remain the best indicator.

Can you calculate compatibility with first names only?

Yes. The letters of each person’s first given name give their active number, which describes their everyday behavior. Comparing these two numbers already says something about life together, habits, and ordinary frictions. It is, however, a partial reading: it says nothing about the road each follows, which is read in the birth date. Adding the dates and the birth surnames makes the reading more complete.

What does a contrast mean in numerology?

A contrast means two different numbers that Fermier’s table does not link, such as 1 and 4. It is not an incompatibility. The two people work differently: pace, priorities, way of deciding. The match exists, but it takes more adjustment and conversation. Many solid relationships rest precisely on a well-understood contrast, where differences become resources.

Is the compatibility level reliable?

The test shows no score or percentage, only an affinity level in words: it is reproducible, the same calculation always gives the same result, and it is fully explained. It does not measure love or the strength of a bond. It is a marker that sums up affinities between numbers, nothing more. Two people with a modest level can very well have a happy relationship. Look instead at the detail of the criteria: it says on which grounds the match is easy and on which it needs attention.

Do you need the birth name to calculate compatibility?

For the Expression number, yes: you use the original surname, the one on the birth certificate, not the name carried after a marriage. It is the one that carries the starting personality. Without this name, the tool can still compare first names and birth dates; the reading then rests on one or two criteria instead of three.

Love or friendship compatibility: what’s the difference?

The calculation is identical: the numbers don’t change depending on the nature of the bond. What changes is how you read the result. In love, life together involves daily routine, money, the home, and contrasts are felt more. In friendship, you see each other less often, and a difference of pace weighs less. The pages for each pair cover couples, friends, family, and work.

Does the test say whether our relationship will last?

No, and no calculation of this kind can. The test compares numbers drawn from your first names, your dates, and your birth surnames; it describes ways of doing things, not a future. A high level guarantees nothing, a modest level signals no breakup. What makes a relationship hold, trust, shared choices, how you get through disagreements, can’t be read in any number. The detail by criterion is better used to spot the topics worth talking about early.

What about astrology and zodiac signs?

This test stays within numerology: it compares only numbers. Other traditions bring two people together differently, astrology in particular, which sets each person’s Sun signs, Moon, or Venus side by side. These are distinct systems, with their own rules; blending them into one result would no longer show where the result comes from. If you consult both, read them as two separate perspectives, each with its own method.

Why do other sources say our two numbers go very well together?

Because not all tables rank the pairs the same way. The test follows that of Jean-Daniel Fermier, published in 1984 in “ABC de la numérologie”; other authors and many general-interest sites use others. The 3 and the 7, for example, are in contrast here, while they are often presented elsewhere as complementary. None of these tables is a verdict: each offers a marker. The result shown tells you what the table followed here gives, and the page for the pair explains what it covers.
